I found in the description of privileged accounts that priviliged members can see hidden tags. The phrase "hidden tags" had a link to a page that read "Oh, noooooooooo~ There are no hidden tags~".

Have I stumbled upon some upcoming feature?

No.

It's just a remnant from the settings http://danbooru.donmai.us/ uses, they hide posts that have certain tags (loli and shota, iirc).
