Reason: Crossgender version of the character. Plus we have precedent for it with the aliasing of Futashy to Fluttershy, Molestia to Celestia and so on.

Originally, maybe. But most things tend to agree that Tails is male.

Plus, y'know, ever since the character of Tails was concieved his name was "Miles Prower", with "Tails" only being added in after the fact because "Miles" isn't a very memorable name. And "Miles" is a very obviously male name.
