Seeing as I've just gotten back into the game and purchased it, is there an e621 server our there? I think I remember one being mentioned but I might just be misremembering.

I recently got back into minecraft after I found out they updated the shit out of it in the last 6 months since I'd last played it. With terraria, I got sick of trying to fight off corruption that it just stopped being fun.

A team of people who have to use mod tools and aren't even getting paid can do in one month what the Minecraft devs can do in a year, that's what I've seen anyway. I reckon Mojang is a poor dev who just got lucky.

naw man, have you seen this guy Notch? the guy's a genius in every sense of the word. he made a game from scratch to completion in under 48 hours of non-stop coding.

Except that he hasn't done any of this. Instead, he talks about how Infiniminer inspired Minecraft. And since you brought it up, I'd like to point out that, no, Infiniminer != Minecraft, except for a blocky aesthetic. Also, Notch talks about how he's learned he's only an average programmer.

Saying something like "how much coding could the original have taken" truly, massively understates the effort that goes into any modestly performant 3d game engine. I would retort with "if it's so easy, why don't you do it?" Except that by your question I can tell that you have no programming experience whatsoever. So go to GameDev.net, pitch your MMOFPSRTSRPG that'll totally be better than WoW with 3 guys working for 4 weeks in your bedroom at your parents' place, and get laughed off the forums there.

It's also disingenuous to say that Mojang must be horrible because the mod community has moved in more directions more quickly than Mojang. First, Mojang is focusing their efforts on Scrolls, and has been for quite a while. It's not that Minecraft is "done", but the team is only like 4 guys. So you want to say that 4 devoted community programmers can out-program 1 or 2, when taking advantage of mod tools and assets created by other community members? Well... yeah. That's why mod communities are awesome, and why more PC devs should make it easier to mod their games.

Edit: And what is Mojang trying to do? Trying to make Minecraft easier to mod. In fact, they just hired the 4 lead guys from the bukkit mod team specifically for that purpose.

Just because the developer of Minecraft isn't a colossal douche doesn't make Minecraft a good game. It's not even a game at all. It's a computer simulation of having a box of legos.

I think some people have no idea what goes into making a game engine, especially by yourself

A game engine is not a game. If you're making a platform to show off an engine that is called Doom 3, not "a game."

Terraria would be more fun.
Quite fun, in the long run.
Minecraft is dull in the end.
It is not worth what you spend.
Although, I'd prefer Garry's Mod.
Little about it is flawed.
In any case, the potential server owner should make haste.
I'm quite sure that any game you choose would be embraced.

Seriously, try doing it yourself. Make a clone of Minecraft Classic (or do your own thing, as long as it has graphics and game logic at least as complex as minecraft classic). I suspect you'll come away with a better idea of the amount of effort it takes to make even a simple game like Virtual Legos (er...Minecraft Classic).

Nobody has to think Minecraft is a good game. I only took issue with the accusation that Notch and his team didn't work hard to make it, and the implication (whether intentional or otherwise) that Notch was glory-hogging because of it.

Obviously I appreciate it, else I wouldn't jump to either its or Mojang's defense. It's like legos, with monsters. :) Not everyone's cup of tea, but a lot of people played with lego bricks once upon a time.

Well, it got what it got, which means it deserved it. its a fun experience to play it, and it brought attention to the indie world I'm general for many People.
