Topic: "Thread Necromancy"

Posted under General

this is not an urgent topic, but it has occured to me that there are some deadbeats that are going around the site and commenting towards conversations that are several months old. Whether this is an error or not, doesn't matter. It's rather ugly, you have to admit, and makes the site look low-quality. Thank god for comment voting.

There is one solution, just remove comment age, and then it wouldn't look so ridiculous anymore.

Images are not the same as the forum, unlike the forum, you can comment on an image no matter how old it is.

There's nothing wrong with commenting on an image that's been here for seven months. Granted, you'll look like an idiot if you try to join a conversation that old, but you aren't hurting anyone but yourself.

The reason necro-threads are so abhorrent is because the content has already been discussed and no one is interested in it any longer. That doesn't really apply to images on an image archive. Thirty years from now (not that e621 is likely to survive that long) an image posted today will hold value, and invite commentary.

there's nothing witty about butting into an old topic and looking like some froob trying too hard to be clever.

I never said it was hurting ME, either. I said it makes the site look low quality.

THEY ARE NOT THREADS

YOU ARE MADE OF STUPID AND INABILITY TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FORUM THREAD AND AN IMAGE.

Just because it's not on the forum doesn't mean it's not a thread. 'Thread' describes the way in which users hold a conversation on a particular topic. Even a conversation on youtube where the users reply to each others comments would be considered a thread.

With that said, no one cares about users posting on older images. It might be a bit annoying if they bump it, but it's not worth creating a topic about.

How much time would have to pass before posting in a thread is considered thread necromancy?

I disagree entierly.

There's no reason at to frown at people "thread necroing" here.

Yes, they might look silly jumping in to a conversation that happened a long time ago, but it reflects soley on them as a commenter, and not on us as a site.

More so... I don't think posts are "bumped" anywhere but on the recent commetns page--a page where I, at least, have found a number of fun and new images.

there's nothing really "ugly" or "low quality" about it. This isn't a forum where the most recently commented on threads stay on page one. This is an image board where after a certain period of time, art drops almsot entierly off the radar... and a 'common' piece of art (ie, a nude pin up of a female fox on the beach) will almost never be unearthed jsut by the power of it's tags... the "attention' brought to it by being commented on will be short and brief, but that's a moment that that image might not ever have otherwise.

You ever end up in one of those situations, where you're walking away after an arguement, and realize, 15 minutes later, that you should have said THAT instead? Yeah. There's nothing witty about calling your 'opponent' back and going "Oh yeah? well your cats smell like loafers!".

that situation has no bearing at all on this topic. Because no one will notice but the people looking at the recent comments page. The people who originally posted will not be 'bothered' by emails or notifications of someone replying to their thread, the original poster won't have a clue that there are comments goin' on on their post... etc. the only way you knowis if you go looking for it.

This topic, leave it alone.

Also.. I agree with Marbles c_c

Depends on the topic and forum, but I'd say don't post in general topics that are over two weeks old. If the topic was a technical question, or a larger thread (e.g. "Post your screenshots", "Funniest bans") then the thread could take longer before being considered dead. Just use your own discretion to decide whether posting in a particular thread would be "keeping it alive" or "digging up the dead." If a thread is on page three or four, it's probably best to let it sink.

If it's a sticky, you should be able to post in it anytime it would normally be appropriate. Otherwise, it shouldn't be a sticky.

Never dig up forum topics that are over a year old, ever. If there are threads that are over a year old on the front page, the forum is mostly dead, if not completely.
