Eh, don't feel bad, they had to.
It's all about branding, they can't copyright or trademark sci-fi or scifi because it's too common in usage.
So they were forces to change it to something unique to protect their copyrights.

No, rating explain those.
Don't get me wrong, I think that having them on is stupid, but so is the current TV ratings system.
Those shows get good ratings, mostly because people who watch them aren't smart enough to watch tv online, so it makes good advertising money.
As an aside, I listen to too many podcasts that talk about the tv and movie business :P
