Topic: Awesome Anime

Posted under Off Topic

So, I love anime. I watch Toonami every Saturday because they have awesome anime. Toonami has added Attack on Titan to its lineup, and holy shit, it's awesome so far. Here's a short list of some anime I love to death.

-Black Lagoon
Black Lagoon is an anime series about a group of mercenaries who do all sorts of illegal things for money. Unfortunately, a meek Japanese businessman gets caught in the middle of one of their "endeavours," and ends up joining them. It's awesome because it's funny and full of truly epic gunplay. Plus, there's a scene where they jump a PT boat and launch one of its torpedoes at an attack helicopter. Pretty fucking epic.

-Attack on Titan
Holy shit, this is a good anime. I've only seen one episode and I can tell it's fucking awesome. The visuals are gorgeous and the Titans are truly terrifying. I can't wait for the rest.

-Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
This is one of those anime that can confuse a lot of people. It follows the adventures of Public Security Section 9, whose staff consists of cybernetically-enhanced master hackers. This is probably a really well-known anime, but it's really good.

-Initial D
If you're a car fanatic, this is the anime for you. Takumi Fujiwara delivers tofu for his dad's shop. As it turns out, his father's AE86 Corolla isn't what it seems. It's pretty damn fast, and his father was one of the greatest street racers years ago. Takumi takes the car out for late night racing, sometimes with his father's consent, sometimes without it.

-Case Closed
A young, promising detective named Jimmy Kudo has helped the police solve countless murders. One fateful night at an amusement park, he stumbles upon a shady deal. When he's discovered, the unknown men poison him. Instead of killing him, it turns him into a little boy! Under the fake name of Conan Edogawa, he solves murders using some James Bond-style gadgets and his ingenuity.

So, what are some anime you guys are into?

Totally forgot that one. I love FMA. I'd love to get the whole series on DVD.

Well Case Closed is pretty good, the same goes for One Piece.

But as my favorite I gotta say Hellsing, even though the OVA could do without those overexaggerated faces.

Aww nah, it happened! This forum could easily support an anime club of sorts. It seems to have reached that critical mass.

My favorites, in the order that I saw them:

  • Black Lagoon
  • Beck - Mongolian Chop Squad
  • Code Geass
  • Legend of the Galactic Heroes
  • Shinsekai Yori (From the New World)
  • Welcome to the NHK
  • Steins;Gate
  • Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Higurashi - When They Cry)
  • Monogatari (all, but Bakemonogatari was best)
  • Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor
  • Berserk
  • Ghost Hunt

Not in my "favorite tier," but still good:

  • Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
  • Monster
  • Requiem for the Phantom
  • Psycho-Pass
  • Hikaru no Go
  • xxxHOLiC
  • Angel Beats!
  • Hunter x Hunter (prefer original)
  • Attack on Titan
  • Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
  • Kingdom (the shounen, not to be confused with The Twelve Kingdoms, which many also like)
  • Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)

Action, suspense, dark, thoughtful. Prefer suspense, like psychological thrillers. "Mindfuck" is generally a shitty misnomer for "too low context to understand grand vision"--not what I'm after, anyway. Supernatural isn't a requirement, it's just more of an interesting and captivating platform. Code Geass is my model anime that I wish many more anime could be like, but I believe every show on my favorites list did some especially well that made them more than "just a show" for me, rather something memorable.

...hmm.
Based on that, and your likes list, I'm tempted to recommend Ghost Hound or Shion no Ou.

Those two are definitely not for everyone, but sounds like you might like them.

Patchi may be right, lol.

Young girls, let's say no older than 14, who "sell their souls," in essence, to have any one wish granted. In exchange, they are now compelled to fight "witches," which can be thought of as manifestations of evil, or more precisely,

negative human emotions, IIRC(?).

Of course, there's more story than that. That's just the basic premise.

It doesn't suck (IMO), because:
1. The art has some good moments, with the fights coming off as particularly imaginative pocket universes.
2. The backstory, the reason why things are the way they are, is not a simple matter. Your perception will be significantly altered as you become disillusioned. Also, when the backstory comes to the foreground, the main story takes an even greater larger-than-life direction.
3. You get a good view of the characters' struggles to deal with their dilemmas and personal motivations. Even though they are younger than normal by anime standards, the characters all seem to demonstrate at least some understanding beyond their years, yet they aren't fully mature either (debatable in one case). In terms of general appeal, I imagine this is a mixed bag, but the key point is that the characters don't neatly fall into easy stereotypes, which keeps them interesting throughout.

I have seen Ghost Hound, right on the heels of Ghost Hunt. Maybe that's its natural place in the (anime) universe lol. I really liked how they brought in credible (?) psychology research into the paranormal for some unexpected authenticity. Great audio. Really good atmosphere at times. It was almost scary until things were explained :). It didn't quite make my second list because the story was a bit low-key, or too restrained, for me. If it pushed the boundaries a bit while keeping everything else still intact, then it would probably have qualified as a favorite. Good for anyone who wants a more credible paranormal story, IMO.

Shion no Ou, on the other hand, seems right up my alley. Battle of wits tag on anidb is very telling. I would have come to it sooner or later, but thanks for mentioning it. Might move it to the shortlist :).
