What, if anything, should be done to the cartoon tag?
From what I can see, it contains at least four types of posts:

1) Toony art, which would fit better the toony tag.
2) Cartoon and anime characters.
3) Cartoon screenshots.
4) Toony animations.

In short, it seems to be used as an umbrella tag for anything that's somehow related to cartoons.

It seems to cover too much to be useful. What should be the main use of the tag? I think toony art should be moved under the toony, where it belongs, but I'm not entirely sure what to do about the rest.

toony is a bad tag. Firstly because it's cartoony but slang. Secondly because who would think of searching it? I bet almost all those posts are from the alias, cartoony- which was aliased to the slang term why, exactly? Bah. If it's meant to be used for western-style animation specifically, it should be termed as such.

Cartoon is an appropriate metatag/urtag/overtag for all those concepts, regardless.

I say nuke it or apply it like video game tag, but more in favor of nuking it as it seems to cover far too much to be helpful

I'm for nuking it: having cartoon and cartoony as separate tags is just asking for mistags. But it should be cleaned up first.

I'm mostly wondering if it'd be useful to have some umbrella tag for cartoon characters? I don't think I'd need it myself, but maybe someone would..?

When users were posting their blacklists in that one thread, I noticed that there were a lot of cartoon shows blacklisted. So having them all under one tag might be useful for blacklist purposes?

Let's keep cartoony and apply it to those very exaggerated drawing styles like eyeballs floating out of the head, enormous and often unconnected anatomy, etc

We might want to have cartoon used like video game and that if it's from an anm=imated series then tag it, but that turned out to be not so helpful

That's what I was thinking of how to use it.

Cartoon seems like it would be too vague and too widely used to actually be useful as a tag since tags are used to narrow out what you are looking for.

Umbrella tag for cartoons could end up being just as unhelpful. Maybe that's even probable, considering that MLP would fall under that category. It would easily have more images than video_games..
