Topic: Tag Change: char:birdo -> species:birdo

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The birdo characters are a species of dinosaur-like creatures much like the yoshis containing both male and female members. The main character is the only crossdresser known, Japanese named Catherine.

I suggest that either the Birdo tag be changed into a species tag rather than a character tag, and a separate character tag be made for crossdresser birdos sporting a bow and diamond ring, either Birdo_(character) or Catherine. Besides, it's rather awkward to have a character tag on pictures where Catherine isn't present simply because the character in the picture is a birdo.

...We have images of that species that aren't of Birdo/Catherine? Huh.

That said, we generally go by "names the world knows them by", and most of the world knows Birdo by the name Birdo, not Catherine. This said, I vaguely remember that the species is actually called Vadim?

I've never heard of Vadim before. But if the case is that you are going by most (presumed english) well known name then the tag could be Birdo_(species) or Birdo_(character) to separate it.

Here are some pics of Birdos that aren't Catherine.

For all I know, that is called Birdo since Mario 2 (and "Birdie" on M&L: Superstar Saga)

The bio in Mario 2 states, "Birdo thinks he is a girl and likes to be called Birdetta. He likes to wear a bow on his head and shoot eggs from his mouth."

The Japanese version is calls him Catherine and states that he likes to be called Cathy.

Original japanese name is Catherine. Name for the majority of the rest of the world is Birdo. It IS a character name (Birdo originally wanted to be called "Birdetta" instead of Birdo, after all), but to my knowledge the species has never been stated aside from that vague recollection, which when I google it crops up a lot, with "(boy)" after it. Yet attempting to find a translation of Vadim doesn't return anything, so it seems like that's the species name? I don't know. ._.

A fan-made wiki that doesn't cite sources is not canon. Yes, there are more than one of the species, this we know from the show and other media (even the original SMB2), but in all cases the species name has never been stated. Birdo has only ever been used to define the specific character. What the wiki is doing is making a decision to call the species 'Birdo', not using a canon name. Even in the Strikers, Melee, and Brawl bio and trophy infoblurbs, the way it's worded is directly referring to the one character as Birdo, not naming the species. Conversely, Yoshi is both the name of the one Yoshi and also the name of the species, as they are canonically referred to as "Yoshis".
