Topic: Joke tags: New catagory?

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Currently joke tags are kept "because they are fun". Most of them don't actually provide any function at all (there's a few that do, like the pinkie_pie_out_of_fucking_nowhere tag, or lost_my_keys, for another, but for the most part, they don't actually, well, do anything other than be a meme for the sake of being a meme, which we already deny images of).

I bring this up for consideration, for joke tags getting their own catagory, since they aren't exactly general tags following the general tagging guidelines. It'd also legitimize them somewhat, and give users looking for a laugh a specific section to look at for such things. It'd also stop issues with trying to remove joke tags in general, especially when sometimes joke tags do get removed through the normal process, currently, which makes it feel arbitrary rather than properly supported.

Let's face facts: The administration as well as a fair portion of the userbase likes joke tags and wishes to keep them. They aren't going to go away any time soon. Since they are supported by the administration, why not actually bother making them official tags rather than just drek that sometimes shows up for aliasing because to the person posting the alias suggestion, it doesn't have any use besides being a joke tag?

At least with this they'd have some legitimate reason to exist within the formal structure of accurate tagging rather than just being seen as just trash to be disposed of.

How is it being explained? I mean, when you want to watch a comedy show, you go to the comedy channel, or put on a show that is tagged comedy in the channel guide, or if you go for a more involved setup, to a comedy show at a club. How would creating a separate catagory for them be any different than that?

We really don't have to have an official explanation or policy for absolutely every single thing we do. We have policies for the important stuff that has a real impact on how the site operates or is intended to be used.

We really want to concentrate on issues or changes that actually make the site better. The existence of a few joke tags is causing literally no problems at all, it's not something we have to deal with on a daily basis, it's not something anyone else is actually complaining about.

I understand the desire for consistency and policies; I understand the desire to have the site operate in a completely orderly and logical fashion. But we really, really need to not sweat the small stuff. I'm not saying we should never respond to a potential issue until it actually starts causing problems, but I think we should also heavily factor in information such as whether or not something has the potential to ever be a problem actually worth the time and effort it would take to correct it and manage it.

A few joke tags here and there are not causing the site to fall apart, nor do I personally consider that to ever be a possibility with the way the site currently operates. If other admins feels differently then that's fine, we'll address it. But I don't think that's the case.

For the sake of keeping the thread on-topic and civil, I'll refrain from mentioning examples of issues that ARE causing us problems (although I guess I'm inadvertently mentioning one of those potential issues by even making this statement :P).

Fair enough. I was bringing this up for consideration in general, not as something that needs to be addressed immediately or anything of the sort. Much like how tagging projects were long-term goals that wouldn't be realized for quite some time with some of the larger projects- Or at least, that is how I see it. How others see it? I couldn't say.

Anyways, if you feel that me bringing so many various topics forward like this is an issue, do please feel free to tell me, publicly or privately, Char. Same for those other issues you mentioned needing to be resolved, if I can be of assistance in actually resolving any of those (not admin stuff obviously, but like tagging projects and the sort).
