Topic: [REJECTED] alias bat_nose -> leaf_nose

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #12710 has been rejected.

create alias pig_nose (942) -> flat_nose (33)
create alias bat_nose (1053) -> flat_nose (33)

Reason: It is discouraged to use specific animal species in anatomy tags, and these two nose types look very similar. They should be condensed into the more objective flat_nose.

Updated

I don't disagree with discouraging specific animal species in anatomy tags, but this BUR will lump pig/bat noses together with bare nostrils and na'vi-type noses, both of which can be reasonably described as "flat":

Bat noses frequently are drawn in way that is not something that could be described as flat nose even under the loosest definitions.

post #5221797 (exact opposite of flat nose)
post #5400399 (virtually identical to dog nose, with only difference being that it has upwards growth)

In general lumping these types of noses as same type of nose as pig noses is not really it:
post #3643654

Basically if something needs to be done to the bat nose tags, it's going to need to be cleaned manually under more generic descriptive terms on case by case basis.

Fair point on the Na'vi noses, but I don't think it makes sense to tag bare nostrils as any kind of nose. Those should probably have their own tag.

That doesn't look anything like a dog nose to me.

But alright, is there a better descriptor? The scientific term for bat noses is a nose-leaf (or leaf nose). Would that be acceptable?

There is also flying foxes which are bats (despite being called flying fox) that have noses that aren't flat:
post #5478838

To be honest, non-flying fox bats have leaf noses rather than flat ones. The leaf helps them with their echolocation. Since flying foxes use their vision to find their food instead of echolocation, they don't have leaf noses.

You cannot really alias the bat nose tag away. It's actively and consistently used for variety of different types of noses that cannot be lumped under one tag. Any alias to a very specific type of nose is virtually guaranteed to cause constant mistags.

What should be done, then? Disambiguation?
