Topic: Can You Upload Something Without A Link?

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

So I find an image from Rule34 that’s clearly drawn by Jaeh that I want to put on here. Problem is, there’s no listed source and I can’t find the image anywhere else. If it’s on twitter, I can’t see it because I don’t have a twitter account.

I don’t want to get in trouble on here.

You mean without a source? I'm going to assume you mean that since you can just upload any image you want through your device without having the direct image links.

We generally do not encourage you to use artworks from secondary sources, especially other imageboards or boorus (see howto:source and howto:sites and sources).
This is especially the case for both Rule34 sites since they have lower standards than us and may feature things that we do not allow.

The main concerns are:

  • 1) Quality
    • We want the highest publicly available quality of an artwork, which you tend to get from primary sources/straight from the artist.
    • Other sites may not care about quality and may feature artworks that are "reposts of reposts" with severely degraded image quality.
    • Posting artworks from there would very likely result in your post being deleted/replaced by someone who did a little more legwork in finding a better/original source.
  • 2) DNP Content
    • We do not allow commercial/pirated content to be posted here.
    • Other sites may feature pirated content, which are commonly posted without a source.
    • Posting pirated content, either knowingly or unknowingly, will get your account slapped with a record.

Ok, thanks.

I tried image searching it, but no luck. Maybe if I asked in that source thread they’ll help.

Defining "source" is sometimes hard.
But in this instance, if you get the content from rule34 and you cannot find the content elsewhere and source field there is empty, then rule34 is the source.

I'm just saying that if you were to upload that from there to here, then you should put that site as a source.
Really often it is found out that it might be from e.g. deleted tweet or someone finds FA post from 10 years ago when it was posted directly and it can be proven that the rule34 is posted by third party from those, then at that point you can simply remove rule34 from sources and put the original one into the sources.

But also like mentioned above, it could be that you are uploading bad quality copy, which can hit you with deletion or it could be from patreon, at which point you can get record. However sometimes there are situations where it's commission that artist never posted and the commissioner only uses rule34 and it was never anywhere else, so these situations can sometimes be messy.

I can say that we do not just assume stuff without source is e.g. pirated copy by default and we do have to have at least some level of lead to go by, so you won't get record by just not having proper source.

I think I’ll just leave it alone then
