Topic: Why are so many of the traditional art images I uploaded deleted because they are of too low quality?

Posted under General

There are plenty of undesirable artefacts that can come about as a result of photographing a traditional artwork instead of scanning it. In post #5737137, there are wrinkles on the page and the lighting creates a gradient across the image. There is also a very slight skew effect due to the positioning of the camera. In post #5877231, the skew is stronger and the image is somewhat blurry, on top of poor lighting and camera grain.

Personally I would only upload scans of traditional artwork, but pictures with very consistent lighting and a well-positioned camera should be fine.

Please familiarise yourself with our Uploading Guidelines, including what is good and bad to upload here.

If you feel something might not be approved because it gets deleted all the time, feel free to ask here or a janitor if it would be approved beforehand.

You gotta scan. Also, even if you only have a phone, they make apps that let you scan things like that. Obviously the color accuracy won't be perfect (but it seldom is with scanners). Full disclaimer, I seldom post my traditional stuff here because it's usually incomplete and not usually in color.

I don't know why multiple people are advising the OP to use a scanner when they are reposting poorly-photographed artworks from other artists instead of their own work. It doesn't help.

@kubihazusaikou, to build on what I had said earlier, check out the Quality Standards section of the Uploading Guidelines.

  • "Traditional media needs to be either scanned in properly or photographed with impeccable lighting and contrast."

You should only upload traditional artworks that are professionally photographed or digitised using a scanner.
Do not upload anything that is photographed badly with obvious shadow or a grainy effect due to poor lighting.
