Topic: Would it be possible to order tags through a method other than alphabetization?

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

I'm aware the answer is almost certainly "no", but alphabetical ordering of tags combined with English's adjective-first word order makes tagging a lot more difficult than it needs to be. I mean, color adjectives alone can spread tags all across the alphabet. I find this makes me waste a lot of time re-reading and double-checking to make sure I have all the right tags for hair/clothing/fur etc. If the algorithm could somehow exclude adjectives from alphabetical ordering, mass tagging would be a lot quicker and easier.

The answer is yes, you can define the order with custom CSS. I've made styles that move color tags to the bottom of the list, and gender/form/count, penetration, low post count tags to the top. You can find them in CSS library.

  • In what context? In the tag search, you can sort them by multiple metrics. If you're talking in the sidebar, then not at present.
  • How would we even do this? If we break apart at the underscores & sort by the 2nd word, some things would still fail using this, & it's even more inscrutable than the natural alphabetical ordering. If we specifically target certain words, that's wildly inefficient & only extends the potential benefit to those narrow cases, even furthering the confusion.
  • If you're tagged a solid-color character (not that you really need to tag each part in that case), it's arguably better to group by color (which is incidentally what the current system does).

If you think in terms of the colors that are tagged instead of the items that are tagged, this isn't a problem, & is instead beneficial. If you're missing a color, then you can see it easily. We're not going to add a more demanding sorting method that will not only have niche benefits, but actually worsen the experience for some users. And no, making this an option is not an acceptable retort; now we're devoting even more dev time for a minor benefit for a potentially miniscule subset of users, many of whom won't even know to take advantage of it.

We enable users to customize their experience with userscripts & custom CSS; that is the place for these kinds of things.

Oh cool, I didn't know about that. I'll give those a try.

I mean, yes, if you like to tag in a way that's compatible with this ordering it's beneficial, but if you don't (and I don't) it's confusing. I prefer to mentally break an image into anatomy rather than colors when multiple characters are depicted. But yeah, this is probably better served by a custom CSS.
