Topic: Shading first or Color first?

Posted under Art Talk

Hey, so there is something I want to know if there any good digital artist can answer this: So the thing is do you shading first before start coloring the lineart? Or just go for color first then shading after?

I usually start sketch, lineart then color and shading after. When I watch some Youtube about speedpaint I see some people do shading and then color the base after, and I was wondering if this will gonna help me alot on digital art?

I wanna hear your opinion.

Honestly either is fine depending on your own preferences and techniques you use. Shading first can help with ensuring that the values are good, but coloring first can help with keeping the shading cohesive with the color palette. Shading first tends to work better for more elaborate digital paintings since it requires more thinking about the shading and values as whole, while coloring first tend to work better for more simpler and more comic style digital drawings since the shading is not usually as elaborate. I think most important to consider is what works for you best, so I recommend giving it a try to see if it works for you.

While I tend to do more of those detailed and elaborate digital paintings, I still personally prefer to doing colors first. It's how I'm used to doing it, and it helps me to ensure that the coloration works well with the shading.
