Topic: inspired_by_ (specific artist)

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

Been wondering (& procrastinating) on this for a few months.

Wondering about if there should be tags when a new work (by artist-B) is inspired (all or in part) by another artist's style (artist-A):
such as inspired_by_gustav_klimt
( I was considering tags such as in_style_of_gustav_klimt but some of the artworks are of MIX of Klimt style AND other style)

Tag that i think is related: style_emulation (but is a mix of other style emulation)

Example A: New artwork inspired by style of Gustav_Klimt
2 examples of A: post #5510953 and post #3582184
(both tagged with gustav_klimt (tag CATEGORY artist), but were NOT created by Klimt ... as far as i can tell)

One piece tagged with gustav_klimt is by Klimt:

***
Example B: New artwork inspired by style of (Piet) Mondrian
Examples of B: post #707063
(tagged with piet_mondrian (tag CATEGORY artist), but were NOT created by Mondrian)

***
Example C: New artist related to Keith Haring style
keith_haring (tag category COPYRIGHT)
Which is a mix of
i) very close to Haring's style
example: post #3529793 (the art on the shirt)

ii) NOT exactly Haring style

Unlikely, that would be so so many new tags and terrible with relations. The flat tagging system is not meant for this. An inspired_by_ combo tag is not ideal. Also, keep in mind that in general, we want new general tags being created have at least 100 posts they apply to.

A more general tag for inspired or style would be fine, but specifying who it is inspired by, in most cases, seems like a no-go

This would be better to put in the description, as well as parenting to the original post if the inspiration was a specific post that's on the site

For reasons already stated, it wouldn't work well. A tag designating 'inspired by's as such would be useful, especially for often parodied/emulated artists who have work here. Style_emulation and parody should catch most stuff, but it won't grab things like 'used a recognizable motif from this famous painting but did not emulate the style'. A tag for stuff like that would have to be named in a way that it's clear what it's for. 'Inspiration' or 'inspired' on their own would be confused for just emotions.

There is an existing tag called inspired_by_formal_art. That should catch things like this image, which make reference to specific pieces of artwork, but aren't style_emulations:

I think it's sufficient to have inspired_by_formal_art, style_emulation and parody. I don't think those tags need to be made more specific by having versions that name the referenced artist. (No need for things like inspired_by_picasso, etc.)

If a specific piece of artwork gets referenced very often, it can get its own copyright tag, as happened with american_gothic (the MLP example above) and saturn_devouring_his_son.

As for tagging the artists that are the source of the inspired/emulated/parodied image:

The below image is currently tagged with Salvador_Dali as the artist. But I don't think it should be: in this case Dali should be tagged as a character, but not an artist:

But the below image includes a full original Dali painting as a reference_image, so in this case IMO it would be OK to tag Dali as an artist:
