Topic: What drives your uploading decisions?

Posted under General

Do you just want to share your own art, or art you like? Do you have some other reason for uploading the kind of art you do? Does the number of upvotes, faves, or comments you get affect what kind of content you upload, or how often? Or do you not care about the metrics when you decide what to upload?

Personally, I've only uploaded my own commissions for the sake of sharing them; metrics haven't really factored into that. I just got curious about the thoughts other users might have on the matter.

Most of my posts are just higher quality replacements of random posts. Majority is content I am either indifferent about, or actively dislike. I just get dopamine from looking up higher quality versions of posts. My "original uploads" (the ones that are not replacements of other people's posts) are random art that I liked. They usually get kind of lukewarm but positive reception because it's all sfw content, and not the kind that people find romantically or sexually attractive.

I don't really care about votes, faves or comments at all. Like it's nice if other people like the art I uploaded, because it means that others like the art that I like to look at. But it does not influence what I post at all. And for the replacement uploads I could not care any less about what people think of them.

I only upload things i make or things that were made for me. I'd upload more often, but unfortunately most of the NSFW art I make has characters I'm not allowed to post here [as per request by my friend].
As for metrics I dont care. Most of the time the only reason I'd look at any metrics at all is to just see what sort of things people like. It doesnt affect what I draw

I upload my own art to have all of it in one place. Different sites have different rules, but e6 is the most lenient about content (there's nothing I draw that isn't allowed on this site). Of course, any art made for me that I can upload I will do so, since it's nice to have tags for my OCs. I also upload the work of others if I feel it's interesting, quality, and/or niche enough to be archived, for that stuff it's pretty much entirely arbitrary.

As for metrics, I really don't care about art made by others getting more or less engagement. With my own art, it's interesting to see what people like, but I'm going to upload every finished piece whether it will get engagement or not, since making art is something I enjoy for its own sake.

2. completeness of padding out a specific new tag as illustrative examples that others can reference
3. tummy

There's a sense of achievement when you find an artist you interest in, while their artworks are no where to be seen on this site, and you decide to upload all of them to here.

Rather it'll get deleted because of random reasons. j/k
Seriously, I do get demoralized when I find out something is not tagged AI-generated at source. I don't do offers of wholesale assistance to someone trying to navigate uploads and the tagging system anymore, either.
I still do tagging of other's uploads, though. AFAIK, you'd have to almost intentionally screw that up. :-D

My uploads are usually for niche things or completion's sake. Yeah, the higher-quality replacement is a common reason on another Booru I'm on, like Ruppari mentioned. Bigger problem on that Booru is the tagging, though!

Moonlit-Comet, it kind of sucks when characters are DNP, but that's just how it works when doing commissions for some people. I'm just sad to see good-quality lost media.

Emionix has the right idea. It's often farrrrr easier to organize your comics or the like on a Booru. You have pages tagged with characters for example, so you can just find references if you forgot something or lost notes. You can keep references to sites you want traffic on in the source and artist/copyright Wiki entries. You also bypass the Twitter Exposure Problem, entirely. If someone's interested in a specific niche, then they'll find you much easier than on some site like that. Unlike Discord, you don't just suddenly lose access to your organized uploads. Yeah, the metadata/relationships between data have a lot of value, too, and definitely take time to organize. Now the flip side of this, is maybe you don't actually want exposure. If so, you should preemptively add yourself to DNP on big platforms like e621. Same with using anonymous artist tag if you don't want to go that far.

I have a local gallery of images I download from boorus. The app I use to download them allows me to put the tags in the image's metadata and I use another app to browse by tags. More often than not I upload here so I can use the tags in my local gallery. Other than that it's mostly alts of images that were already uploaded here, characters I just think are neat, and my own art once in a while.

i upload art for the sake of preservation without disappearing in clouds, also stimulative urge of accumulating comments and favorites of posts, tagging implication system, and loose advertisement of how many people start following the artist via provided sources - it's rewarding for the mind

Raccoony saving the metadata is the most brilliant move, ever. Using that data in another program seems sensible.

Yes, not providing sources is a real dick move on the part of sites like SK and HPC. All take, and no god damn give.

I can assure you none of the art I make for my friend is going to be lost media lol. I post in several other places[furaffinity, toyhouse etc] without issue, and backup my drives frequently because I don't like deleting my old art. He's just not comfortable with me posting it in large public boorus like e621 and I respect that.

To share my own stuff in a place that's actually active, at least what of my stuff is viable to post here since while I do some furry stuff, it isn't my primary focus.

I've not really let metrics influence what I've made or posted, but they are fascinating to look at, and try to figure out if there's rhyme or reason why some stuff with the same theme/kink/character pops off and some just tanks. (I know a lot of it's luck and timing, but dumb lizard brain can't help but wonder.)

I like sharing my own drawings. When I tell someone I post art, it’s so they can find my work here, or I just directly show them what I’ve drawn. There are still a few drawings I haven’t posted yet — not because I don’t want to, but honestly because I’ve been too lazy to do it.
I upload my art because I want to see how I’m progressing and improving. Looking at it, the progress might be slow, but at least it’s progress! Sometimes I think, “This doesn’t look good,” and then I somehow make it even worse… but that doesn’t bother me too much, because I know I’m still getting better little by little.
I also kind of like seeing how many favorites or votes I get. Sometimes a drawing suddenly gets a lot of attention for no clear reason— well, actually, it’s usually because my friends suggested what I should draw, and people liked the content. But I try not to do that too often, because drawing things just for popularity doesn’t feel like me. I want to post what I enjoy drawing.
So, the main reasons I post my drawings are: I want to get better, I want to share them with people, and I want to enjoy what I make. Even if I’m not always happy with the quality, that’s just part of the process, and I’ll keep going.

It comes down to this.

A few years ago I went through a bunch of art I downloaded in the late '90s and early '00s. There is some inconsistency in what gets deleted for "not meeting quality standards" but I think it's worth the risk. (I've seen sketches deleted that others uploaded when I was directly told sketches that show knowledge of how to draw are fine.) But it all comes down to preservation. I should do another deep dive into my old downloaded art. Because the idea of it just disappearing forever is terrible. I say worth the risk because a majority of art from the turn of the century is going to be lower resolution, and the mainstream furry artists of the much more niche fandom at the time were more like the low/moderately skilled furry artists of today. The pretty good artists of today would have been superstars back then. And the superstars back then are instantly recognizable for those of us that have been around that long but are not significantly more skilled than hundreds of artists of today. But I don't like the idea of that old art just poofing with Furnation and the VCL and such. Tons was only on newsgroups and such too. And of course I make sure to respect the avoid posting lists or when artists outright state they do not want their art reposted.

Other reasons are if it's fan art of characters people would probably want to search for and the artist is not on the avoid posting list and has plenty here. Or if I think something is notable enough or different enough and it was missed by others. I am admittedly a huge fan of fan art so seeing "missing" fan art on the site motivates me sometimes.

Filling in missing alternate images is something I'll do if I notice too. People have a habit of uploading NSFW art but not the clothed version sometimes, for example.

I also used to tag images for myself in a gallery program called ACDSee. Its internal searching got horrifically slow over the years though. I think it might not handle tag implications well and probably does them every search or something. It's still a fantastic image viewer. It used to do all media but they have slacked adding new format support over the years, instead focusing on their bread and butter photography features. But once I stopped being able to quickly tag/find stuff I downloaded with that I started tagging on this site instead. And unlike wasting hours of time for tags that will go away whenever my time ends (morbid thought), at least tag work here stays for others to make use of. It's also rewarding tagging some relevant things that people definitely search for that were missed from people who tagged earlier.

There isn't enough time in the day for me to do everything I want even if I didn't have a job. So I am active here in spurts now and then. But those are my main motivations. Seeing "missing" art of Final Fantasy X characters inspired me to make the account. I originally strictly lurked because it is extremely easy to get banned here judging from the records people have.

I know this topic is a couple weeks old, but it really stood out to me. This stuff deserves to be preserved, even if it's impossible to keep up with everything that deserves it.

I use an alternate account for artwork I directly have the right to post.
