Topic: Do we need both "dark" and "darkness"? [Now with BUR!]

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

The wiki description for dark currently states,

This tag is generally used to describe images where characters are not that well visible, perhaps being outside at night or otherwise enshrouded.

This seems to be describing the same thing as darkness, which currently has no wiki description. I don't think we need both.

Personally, I would suggest aliasing dark to darkness to avoid confusing the tag with images that are emotionally or thematically dark.

I might use the term dim_lighting instead. Dark can be misinterpreted as dark_body or some dark object, while it and darkness can be interpreted as scenes that aren't completely bright, like some nighttime images:

(not really that dark), or referring to a black background:

or scenes that are thematically dark, like horror or depictions of emotional trauma. dim_lighting helps clarify that it's about the brightness of the scene being relatively low.

The bulk update request #12214 is pending approval.

create alias dark (5429) -> dark_(disambiguation) (0)

change category dark_(disambiguation) (0) -> invalid

Reason: Let's try this, for starters.
