Topic: plap vs plap_(sound)

Posted under General

What do you guys think of the plap and plap_(sound) tags? According to their wiki entries the former is for onomatopoeia and the latter is for actual sound effects, but it seems both are fairly mistagged. As of writing plap sound yields 205 results and plap_(sound) -sound yields a whopping 1406 results. There's also 788 posts that have both...

Do these really need to be separate tags? You could argue that someone could want to search for animations with the onomatopoeia "plap" written out but that seems like a fairly niche thing not a lot of people would seek out. It might be better to merge these tags and have anyone who wants the actual sound effect search "plap sound".

The bulk update request #12190 is pending approval.

create alias plap (11367) -> plap_(sound_effect) (0) # has blocking transitive relationships, cannot be applied through BUR

Reason: There are no other onomatopoeia which behaves similarly to it
If we were to follow these two as an example, we'll be doubling the number of these tags for no reason.

plap_(sound) didn't start off on the best of terms either...

• Well.... there's *_(sound_effect)
Which seems to cover onomatopoeia and sound, so maybe it might be best to alias to plap_(sound effect)?

Reject alias #74440 first

alias plap_(sound) -> plap_(sound_effect)
