Topic: Screenshots vs Still Renders

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I have been reviewing the Uploading Guidelines, specifically https://e621.net/help/uploading_guidelines#bad

I understand screencaps from videos are low-quality, but would like to understand if/how a still render may be acceptable if it is part of an animation.

For example: If someone posted a standalone render, which is likely the starting pose of an animation, then linked to the animation.

Would that render be flagged as "low quality", while the animation may be acceptable (if it doesn't break other rules)?

The "screen capture" rule mainly pertains to third-party asset rips or screenshots from games, movies, or videos from sites.
They are considered as "irrelevant to site" as opposed to being deleted due to low quality, and the only exception to this rule is if the screencap was done by the developer or creator of the above media.

When you refer to "someone" posting a standalone render, who is that? It is the artist or some random person?
If it was some random person taking screenshots or frames of random animations, it will be deleted immediately.
If it was the artist, then it depends if the render is "worth" keeping, see e621:duplicate/inferior version guidelines.

Generally, if the render is of higher quality than the actual animation itself or provides something extra that is not seen on the animation, then it is kept.
However, if it is just a random frame from the animation that adds nothing at all, it will most likely be deleted as an inferior post over the full animation itself (should it be posted here).

This would fall into the territory of "the artist posted both". I'll have to look at this a bit closer but this may be closer to what I was looking for. Although the render and animation are both 1080p, I believe the render may be better in quality than the animation (due to render settings).

I'll dig deeper but thanks for the more specific guidelines!
