I wanted to add the artist (bman44) to this post: https://e621.net/posts/5809900

I used 'artist:bman44' but it said that was invalid and made it a generic tag.

If you had added the tag simply as bman44 before uploading, then editing the tags to add artist:bman44 will not work.
You will have to follow the steps as described in the thread linked above.

Oh, so that means bman44 has never been tagged as an artist on here before?
Well, he does now. Never created a tag before.

You get only one chance, yes. Then it's a general tag forever! Well, until you edit the tag category by going to the ''?'' link next to a tag in a post's tag list. BTW, you can't edit a tag category on an empty tag (one with 0 posts).
