Topic: my opinion - the 'image quality' rules are too strict

Posted under General

just to clarify, this is in no way meant to be confrontational or disrespectful - just a statement of my opinion :)

when it comes to video games, i think many would agree that the most important factor is not the graphics - but how enjoyable the game is

well i happen take the same position when it comes to nsfw art, or artwork of any kind for that matter

for me the most important thing is not the quality of the image or video, but what the image/video contains

i would prefer to have a low-quality version of an image (which can be replaced whenever a higher res is found) than not have the image at all

does anyone else feel this way? :)

We enforce a strict image quality rule to force uploaders to find the best resolution available.
Otherwise, people wouldn't bother searching and posting the highest quality possible and would resort to just posting whatever deep-fried "repost of reposts" that they could find because no rules say otherwise.

In cases where the low-quality version is the only version available, this rule is mostly in place to target the artists themselves.
Of course, we would still accept slightly lower quality artwork, but we draw the line when it is egregiously bad and essentially rejecting their low-quality work and telling the artist to "go home and do better".
Otherwise, artists would just deliberately post "enshittified" versions of their work just to spite us or continue to maintain their bad practices.

On another note, we also reject high-quality but egregiously "enshittified" work from artists, such as the case where they apply too much anti-AI/machine learning noise filters over their artwork, see topic #43284 & adversarial_noise.

Hardly anyone exports low-res images anymore, and anything that dates back to the days when they did would probably be allowed on the grounds of historic value. Where are you finding low-res images that were made recently?

not really lol, i think am talking more about image resolution :)

"Image quality" isn't about resolution, but the contents of the image. Stuff like noise or poor lighting if it's digitized real media, or character form and anatomy more generally (misshapen limbs and faces, etc). An image can be a 15000x15000 PNG and still be deleted for not meeting the quality standards. Outside of extreme examples, low_res images are allowed if the contents are good and clear enough. Artists can also scale the image up by 2x or 3x with nearest resampling if it's too small to clearly see at normal size, again assuming the image contents are good enough.

they are apparently quite hard to find now, as the old accounts that uploaded the vids to YT etc are now dead

anyone with a desperation fetish would probably appreciate these, no matter the low resolution xD

FYI using discord as an image host is a terrible idea, all cdn links expire after 24 hours

To be fair, you can regenerate it by posting it into an empty channel and copying the new link.

Sure, but that assumes that the people trying to look at it have discord, or that the op will update the link every 24 hours

I mainly suggested to the OP to use Discord to temporarily share content that they felt needed to be evaluated by a janitor before posting here.
Of course, there are better file hosting sites out there for more permanent solutions, but I don't think that was needed for OP's case.

what's your take on those vids, would they be allowed or not? :)

I will respond to your question on the other thread since it is not entirely relevant to this current thread's discussion.

For future reference, we would typically want to avoid creating multiple threads/discussions about the same topic or to derail existing discussions with irrelevant comments. In this case, it would be inappropriate to ask for content evaluation again when you have already asked about it on a different thread.
