I don't see why we wouldn't have a wearing tag for helmets, wiki or not the name is self explanatory

That just means no one wrote one, nothing else.
Helmets can exist without being worn.
sounds like a good tag to keep. we having wearing glasses, wearing mask, wearing chastity device, etc. just needs to have some implications set up and a wiki written. no tag comes out of the gate all perfectly set up.

honestly, for a few of these, maybe it'd be better to have tags for situations where the item isn't worn instead, since I feel like a lot of the time "worn" is the default...

true, although i think the wearing tags make more sense grammatically then having tags for like "unworn_glasses" when "wearing_glasses" just sounds better.
i don't care too much what the tag names are though tbh i just definitely think its good to keep the tags unaliased

we have discarded_clothing, we could do discarded_* or something.
although I can't really think of a good synonym for "unworn" that'd cover all situations where an item/clothing is either discarded or put away or some other state of unuse.
To be honest, the wearing_* tags are in a weird state of limbo here.
While some tags are properly established, the vast majority does not have proper wiki definitions or implications.
I personally don't think we would ever need a wearing_shirt or wearing_pants tag since the majority of shirt and pants posts will have them be worn on a character by default.
We should be tagging the opposite instead (i.e., discarded_clothing), but the word "discarded" may not apply to every post (e.g., when character is nude but is still holding on to said piece of clothing).
On the other hand, some wearing_* tags do seem to be warranted (e.g., wearing_condom, wearing_chastity_device) if the default scenario is not very clear-cut and may appear as either unworn or worn.

That's when we employ holding_*, which already has tags for everything under the sun

To be fair wearing_* tags that involve clothes don't need wikis because of how self-explanatory they are.

or when the clothes are neatly folded/hung up or in a clothes hamper or in some state of being washed. (it'd also be nice if we had a word that could apply to more than just clothes as well.)

I agree that wearing should be considered the default and is thus redundant. We have both discarded_helmet and holding_helmet already, which seems like it should cover all non-wearing scenarios.

What would be the equivalent tag for other clothing in that scenario? ambient_*, or is that only for living things?

Probably just the clothing tag as is, yeah?
After checking the implication chain for clothes, there isn't any implication for requiring it to be worn or not.
It feels like it's a safe assumption that it's worn or not worn

Well, as TheGreatWolfgang pointed out upthread, we don't have "wearing" tags for most clothing to disambiguate this scenario. I feel the same logic should apply to helmet.
I was gonna go on a weird tangent about my uncertainty on whether helmets and other topwear count as clothing or not because in my project, pokeball_clothing is one of the options I use if the symbol is clearly on a hat. But I don't know if tagging hats for themed-clothing is the same as tagging hats themselves are general clothing
Bumping this because I've got some questions about what should be done with the "wearing*" tags.
Currently, all the "wearing_<item/accessory>" tags that have more than 6000 uses imply those items. (Diaper, glasses, chastity device, condom, chastity cage, mask.)
Below that, the recent topic #60093 is an implication request for wearing_hat -> hat.
My suggestions and questions:
1. How far down that list should we go, in ensuring that all the ""wearing_<item/accessory>" tags imply those items? Should we go as far as giving every single tagged clothing item on this site a "wearing_" version?
2. IMO wearing_glasses, wearing_sunglasses and wearing_goggles should all imply wearing_eyewear.
3. But if we do that, does that mean that wearing_hat should imply wearing_headwear, and wearing_helmet and wearing_crown should imply wearing_headgear?
4. Currently, glasses_only implies wearing_glasses and chastity_device_only implies wearing_chastity_device. Should all other "<item/accessory>_only" tags be implicated to "wearing_<item/accessory>" in the same way?
5. Should wearing_someone_else's_clothing and wearing_another_person's_clothing both be aliased to clothing swap?
6. wearing_character has 19 uses; wearing_another_person has 16. Should one of those be aliased to the other - or maybe to something else?
7. There's a tag that's just called wearing, with 33 uses. Should we invalidate or disambiguate that tag?

Invalidate, it's an incomplete tag, not an ambiguous one.

Not opposed to the idea, the question is the value of the tags vs the potential for it to become bloat. We could have generic wearing_[bodysection]gear/wear and to find specific things like wearing_crown it could be searched for with crown wearing_headgear. Though I suspect that more specific tags may stay unaliased because they are used often
