I think it's not unreasonable to have separate tags for the plural, as it results in a noticeably different hairstyle:

Hair buns are usually located on the left and right of the head:

I'd be fine with aliasing hair_buns -> hair_bun after the initial population of twin_buns (if that's what people want) - in the same way braids is aliased to braided_hair rather than twin_braids.

I tagged the ones with two buns with the new twin_buns tag, checking to see if there was anything that would get lost.

But pretty much the only image tagged hair_buns that had more than two buns was:

I think that if that ever becomes common, we could probably add a multi_buns type of tag for it and implicate it also to -> hair_bun. For now though, the new twin_buns seems sufficient to keep the main variation of that hairstyle findable in a more clear way. So I'm fine with approving the original alias now that's cleared up.
