Topic: Tags are a complete mess

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Between blacklists affecting posts that DON'T have the tag on them, and the tags being "force_corrected*" to a WRONG tag. Male_only =/= male. Male_penetrated =/= male. I don't know how many more tags I have to go down for this to be corrected. These seem to be tied into eachother. Another problem I've noted is the load speed on posts has gone way down, so I don't know if people are posting highres images and they are posting WAY past server capacity to handle it and there needs to be a limit, but it's been getting pretty bad. The biggest problem right now for me is the tags are all over the place and a lot of tags aren't put correctly on posts.

I don't understand what issue you are trying to bring up here.
If a post does not have a blacklisted tag but should have said tag, do yourself a favour and add in the tag yourself. That's why you can edit tags on posts.

Complaining about why some tags are not there does absolutely nothing in making the tag appear more often on the post.
If you notice somebody consistently not adding a tag onto their uploads, send them a message and ask them politely to include those tags in the future.

On the issue relating to "force corrected" tags, learn how tags work before complaining about why things don't work the way you wanted it to.

  • male_only is no longer a valid tag and has been aliased to male, you shouldn't be trying to use it.
    • You adding male/male on post #5195054 because "there's no satisfactory category for this" can be considered Tagging Abuse if you continue doing so.
    • The tag that you may be interested in is male_focus, but this does not apply to the current post. Read the tag wiki on how to properly use it.
  • male_penetrated is a valid tag and does implies penetration and male, so I don't know what's wrong here.

Your blacklist will only block posts that have tags or a specific combination of tags if they're put on one line on your blacklist. If your blacklist appears to be blocking posts that don't have a tag you've blacklisted tag on them, you'll need to recheck your blacklisted tags because it sounds like you're trying to blacklist tags that have already been aliased away to other tags.

Usually, these aliases are synonymous, i.e. two tags mean the same thing but are consolidated into one so that users trying to find posts with one of these tags will be able to find or blacklist posts with the other tag but wouldn't have been able to find because the first tag hadn't been on those other posts. Other times, the aliased tag is not a one-to-one match to the tag it's aliased to. In those cases, there's a combination of tags that can be used to find relevant posts. You can use up to forty tags in a search combination, but you will rarely need to.

As an example, male_only is redundant with the tag combination male solo, so is aliased to male because we can be sure there'll always be a male in the image.

As for male_penetrated giving you posts with male on them, that's intended. After all, if a post has a male getting penetrated, then you can be sure there's at least one male in the post. Thus, male_penetrated implies male, autotagging the latter whenever the former is added to a post, but doesn't remove the former as an alias would.

Male/male is meant for sexual or romantic interactions actively visible in a post between two (or more, but there should be at least two) males. It doesn't refer to someone's sexuality which can't be seen in a post (as other things can like non-homosexuals with pride colors because they're making a statement about LGBTQ+, bisexuals going at it with nary another sex in sight, a male and an andromorph going at it). In the post you tried to tag, there was no male on male interaction visible, only an implied one after the action (text doesn't count because someone speaking can clearly lie, saying he'd been railed by a female when it was clearly a male/gynomorph/herm). There wasn't even a continued post-coital interaction, just two characters shown separately, implying one had been penetrating the other but no indication of an interaction visible in the image.

More often than not, your best bet is frequently to get creative using the tags already on the post, coming up with combinations that will cover what you don't want to see. There's a cheat sheet if you'd like some help.

Another problem I've noted is the load speed on posts has gone way down, so I don't know if people are posting highres images and they are posting WAY past server capacity to handle it and there needs to be a limit, but it's been getting pretty bad. This has been a problem with virtually everyone on the site for at least a month now, Users and staff alike. The issue has been continually looked into, but it's not a problem with the site or its servers. Rather, something is screwy somewhere out on the network infrastructure, so there isn't anything e621 can do about it.
