Topic: Split branding into branding (scar) and branding (commerce)

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

branding and branded on wiki say they're for the permanent body mark/scar via branding iron - however, I've also seen these tags used for company branding, such as logos or company names on clothing. Example: https://e621.net/posts/4785940.

The company version also sometimes appears on the body (via stickers, body paint, tattoos, etc). Example: https://e621.net/posts/4847872.

Could this be fixed by having two different disambiguated tags, such as "branding (scar)" and "branding (commerce)"?

brand may also need to be changed to "brand (disambiguation)", as it's currently a mix of the scar and commerce, and the wiki page only suggests different tags to use in its place.

Extra notes:

  • brand_name also currently exists, and seems to be used for commerce - however it's only on 4 posts at the moment. It also might not work for logos that don't have any text in them.
  • brand_mark currently exists, seems to be used for the scar. 4 uses.
  • branding_mark currently exists, used for scar. 55 uses.

Another thought: some brandings (speaking about the scar type) are magical - should we have a separate tag for that as well? Something like "branding (magic)".

I bring this up since magical brands tend to not have the themes of pain or injury that sometimes come with the burn-type brandings. Magical brands also tend to come with their own themes of influencing the mind/actions/abilities of the target, and might not be permanent. Therefore, having a separate tag for magical brands could maybe help with filtering the associated themes.

For example: https://e621.net/pools/38298 . This is a series of images where a character has a magic brand that gives them bad luck. This is done through a curse instead of physically applied by an iron, and the first image's description says the brand will dissipate over time.
