Topic: [BUR] Removing Warfare_* Characters

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #8554 is pending approval.

mass update warfare_machine -> warfaremachine_(modeler)
create alias warfaremachine_(modeller) (0) -> warfaremachine_(modeler) (49)
create alias warfare_machine_(modeler) (68) -> warfaremachine_(modeler) (49)
create alias warfare_machine_(modeller) (0) -> warfaremachine_(modeler) (49)
change category warfaremachine_(modeler) (49) -> contributor

Reason: Getting rid of the many warfare_* character tags

---

With the new contributor tag, I've updated the list.

The copyright tag warfare_machine will be aliased away to a contributor tag warfaremachine_(modeler). Any existing warfare_* character tags will be updated to use the contributor tag, then be updated to alias to their respective character tags.

The tag specific notes still apply:

Tag-Specific Notes:
  • warfare_goat - Warfare Machine has a lot of different goat models, so that's aliased to the goat species tag
  • *unny - tags like vaporunny are aliased to hybrid, so I've done that for these as well
    • many of the models are not made by WarfareMachine themselves, but rather are edits of their Lopunny model. They'll still be switched to his copyright tag as they're built off his model. (Same goes for domibun_fox_mccloud)
Old Description

Watsit put it best in topic #44983 (and topic #44995)

watsit said:
We shouldn't be tagging individual models as if they're their own characters, which just creates confusion and tag bloat. Fox McCloud is Fox McCloud, regardless of someone's style of him. It's better to just use the normal character tag, with the modeler if necessary.

---

Summary:

This BUR thread updates the warfare_* character tags to be tagged with the copyright tag for Warfare Machine models, then aliases those tags away to the respective characters/species.

Additionally, this BUR specifically will update the tags warfare_machine and warfaremachine to something more clear between whether a post is using his models or is made by him, as the only thing separating those two is a space and the category color.

  • The current copyright tag warfare_machine is updated to warfare_machine_(modeller), which will become the new copyright tags for posts using his models
    • Additionally aliases the non-spaced name with the suffix, so that searches using either will pull up the relevant posts.
  • The current artist tag warfaremachine is aliased to warfare_machine, and both tags will be marked as artist tags. That way, when either are searched, the relevant posts come up.

  • warfare_goat - Warfare Machine has a lot of different goat models, so that's aliased to the goat species tag
  • *unny - tags like vaporunny are aliased to hybrid, so I've done that for these as well

Extra stuff:

Aliases the suffixed name to include the space used in the proposed artist/copyright tags
Added domibun_fox_mccloud as that's an edit of WarfareMachine's model)

I disagree with this approach. I think there can be a place for specific 3D model tags, but I would prefer either to carve out a new category for them (perhaps call it "Assets" and stick it below Meta) or to keep them as they are and implicate them to the relevant _(modeller) tag as well as 3d_(artwork). I don't want to see them disappear completely, since I think they can be useful in a lot of ways, although I agree that the current system is confusing and needs to be clarified.

In any case, 3D modelers need to be credited more in 3D posts. It's the same concept as crediting artists whose pieces are copied-and-pasted into the background of other posts, as wall posters for example.

Also, this is more of a nitpick, but WARFAREMACHINE doesn't use a space in his name anywhere, on his Furaffinity bio he says "its me WARFAREMACHINE!" and on his Patreon he has "Warfaremachine (Victor Suares)" in the title. So I think it should be warfaremachine_(modeller) instead of warfare_machine_(modeller).

We almost certainly aren't getting a new tag category any time soon, so you can practically forget about that
We've been trying internally to get a new tag category for a long time and it's yet to lead anywhere

as it stands currently model creators don't have any place in tagging, but nobody seems interested in enforcing that

I've seen several staff members indicate they think modeler tags aren't a bad idea, it just seems that not everyone agrees on how exactly to implement them and what category(s) they fall under. Given that tags like warfare_machine and petruz_(copyright) now have thousands of posts under them, I think it's past time for there to be clarification on how they're tagged.

Yes, many people desire tags for modelers but they don't fit into our current tagging system
They definitely don't fit under the artist tag, the closest we can get is copyright and that's shaky at best

Just because a tag exists doesn't mean that's the standard, that just means no one has brought up a discussion around it
We only just recently aliased away the commissioner tag togepi1125, which we have clear precedents for aliasing away

I could easily see petruz_(copyright) being aliased away, but no one wants to start that conversation
Every single time I have tried to bring it up internally, the conversation drifted off and nothing came of it

I hope the system is changed, then. Given that many 3D models are paywalled and some have a ToS regarding their use, I think they can easily slot into the Copyright category. But I understand it's tricky.

This seems like a very bad idea without first going through and appending the modeller's username and the model contributed to the descriptions, should we later gain a "contributer/assets" category in the future, and just seems like the VA/Foley purge again, albeit... what justification can there be, here? If it's visual, we tag it, that the creators of models are treated differently from any other creators with work featured in other pieces seems like a weirdly arbitrary line.

The first set of BURs do a mass update to add the modeller tag to the post, before the latter set alias the tags away. One of the several arguments against the individual model tags is that having the modeller tag with the normal character tag is good enough to find images of the given modeller's character model, which these BURs work with.

We don't tag each individual unofficial design of a pre-existing character with distinct tags, which makes it odd to do so just because it's a model.

Each model is, in and of itself, it's own piece of artwork. This is closer to adding a background to an existing piece or animating a static image. You're using another artist's work to create something new. I would still MUCH prefer the specific asset be noted down somewhere, much the same as images in the background of other pieces typically have a note pointing to the original post ID if available. The description field seems to currently be the dumping area for "we don't have a category for this, yet", and video files (which most of these will be) can't have notes put in them like an image can anyway.

Just seems like something that should be done as much for futureproofing as for showing exactly what that creator is being tagged for, as it'll also hopefully prevent tagging disputes.

Random ass question.. Do I keep it as 'modeller' or is 'modeler' preferred? (Basically, British English or American English, respectively?)

Seems tag names tend to prefer British English (gray_x tags like gray_fur are aliased to grey_x/grey_fur, dialog aliased to dialogue, etc).

This can now be changed to the new contributor category. Also, the recommended spelling seems to be _(modeler), with one l. See topic #54179.

So is the neatest way to do this just to make all these character_(modeler) tags aliased to the modeler's contributer tag? Would also, logically, auto-fix anyone trying to still use them.

I'd say aliasing the character_(modeler) tags to the character tags would be better, since they generally start with the character name. And I'd consider the character tag to be more important in cases where someone just tags the character_(modeler) tag without the character or modeler.

My suggestion is to go through the character_(modeler) tags and see if the character is missing on any of the posts, mass update to modeler_(modeler) and alias to the character. Though that might require a bit of work

The models from cryptiacurves/cally3d are especially in the need of a clean-up. A LOT of them are also applied to 2d posts where tags for 3d models/modelers shouldn't be to begin with.

The BUR has been updated! If I miss anything or there's any better options, lemme know.

I'll make a forum for discussion on that. Very different from the warfaremachine situation with all the 2D posts. Won't be able to just do an update to a modeler tag.
