Topic: Grandfathered post got "replaced" by creating a new post (warning, scary)

Posted under General

Here is the old deleted post post #64202

And the new one post #4752533

As I understand, there is a way to replace pictures in old posts without creating new ones, is there a way to undelete and update the old post? The new one got downvoted for being a "duplicate".

I wish the replacement feature would just be rolled out to everybody already, then at least some of this could be prevented.

It's stuck because blah blah unpolished and missing features, of which it seems we will never get
Despite its issues I'd rather it also just be public

How does it work currently? Do we just have to hope an actual admin has nothing better to do than browse furry art on other sites and notices that there's a higher-res copy of something they remember seeing here? Or is there a way to make them aware of one you found?

For the replacement image feature, you go to the post in question and click on a "Replace image" link under the Options heading on the left of the image. That takes you to a page to upload the new version of the image (or provide a direct URL to it) along with an additional source, similar to normal uploads, along with a Reason field to indicate why it should be replaced (it's larger, a PNG, fixed by the artist, etc). You click Upload, then it gets put into a queue and the post shows a banner indicating it has pending replacements, and a moderator will eventually take look at it and determine if the replacement should be accepted or rejected.

I can see why the admins may be hesitant to make it available to everyone, since it would allow any user to upload anything without a source and claim it's a better version of what already exists without specifying a good reason, putting a larger onus on moderators to figure out if it's a valid replacement (e.g. not upscaled, isn't actually lower quality (like trying to replace a PNG with a slightly larger JPG, or replace a JPG with a larger but visibly more compressed JPG), and isn't a paysite leak). It is something that still happens with the normal upload/flag method, but requiring users to make a separate upload can be a deterrent to some people who would otherwise do that. Trusting the feature to people who are known to have legitimate well-sourced uploads, and show a good understanding of what's considered better quality versions, can help cut down on that work.

Most of us want It public, our developer is the only hold out I know of for sure
We hand out the flag like free candy, if people ask for it they are very likely to get it, so it may as well be public already

Looks like even the "Replace Image" link is only available to users with Privileged status or above.

It isn't restricted to a level, it's restricted to the Replacements Beta user flag

I'm kind of mixed thoughts on this. If it gets abused enough to cause a backlog, we can cross that bridge when we get to it? From experience on E-H, it's the sort of thing that just has to be tested to know if it'll work out.

Alternatively, make it more obvious how to request that flag if you make replacements often enough for it to matter?

Where are people supposed to ask for it? I would like to have this ability. I do lots of uploads.

how do you blacklist all creepy/jumpscarey posts like that? is blacklisting creepypasta good enough? I'm really easily startled so it'd help ^^'

Jump scare is also a tag. I thought it was only for videos or GIFs, but maybe not?
