Not always. He's had cameos in quite a few Nintendo games, and is playable in series such as Smash and Mario Party. I'm not sure if those should be tagged as donkey_kong_(series), just because DK is there.

You could say the same about kirby, link, picachu, samus_aran, etc. but they still end up getting tagged with their respective franchise tags.

Yeah, never mind. I thought that donkey_kong_(series) refers to specific subset within the franchise (Donkey Kong Country and sequels), but looks like it's for every DK game.
