Topic: How often do you message?

Posted under Off Topic

P.s Im always down for a good convo :)

I mostly message admins/moderators to make them aware of an issue, or ask them for advice on some matters.

I rarely message users on here because there's not really much to talk about.

Updated by anonymous

Been here a while, my inbox 8 pages of messages... I have no idea why. Mostly chatting with Admins and a couple other users.

74 pages here. :V

I usually send message to people regarding higher resolution posts of they have uploaded, thank people for warning me things and sometimes to chat with someone.

I have 3 pages of messages.

Updated by anonymous

I talk to a couple of people regularly. I don't think anyone's ever messaged me before I messaged them, but most of the people I've contacted I know pretty well now.

Updated by anonymous

It's actually chill to here people still converse somewhat on here.

Updated by anonymous

214 pages.

So much records and ticket spam.

Edit: Every time I create, edit or delete a record a message is send from my account to the receiving party, the same for any tickets updates.

Updated by anonymous

26 pages. Surprisingly only ~15 of them are in the last month (thought it would be more).

I respond to chats sent to me but I rarely initiate them myself (unless I have something I need to do), because although it might seem like I'm fairly approachable, I'm actually ...kind of timid in real life. >.>

I never really message people. Talking to others is what the forums, blips and IRC are for. I guess PMs are useful in certain situations, but not the vast majority of the time.

This basically. 4 pages, 90% ticket things

It's true...

I've been checking my messages less and less often though. I spent too much time on this site when I talked in the messages.

Updated by anonymous

106 pages (~2650 messages; ~1250 sent, ~1400 received), some conversations (which I never start), a couple bug reports (to the site and from the script) and a few site notifications (records and ticket status changes)...

Updated by anonymous

My message box is my email inbox... which is over 1000 pages.

One more message. This one from parasprite: One of your tag implications was deleted

Half of my messages got this title :P

My favorite PM was from Rainbow_Dash.
The title was A negative record has been added to your account

Yeah, same here.

I have 31 pages of hidden, 7 of unhidden. I'm really surprised there's so much. A lot of already done official business though. Like NMNY said, admins will get a Dmail "receipt" notification for every time they do a lot of official actions. So every alias/implication I delete, or marking a ticket as being investigated or handled, or editing/creating/deleting a record, etc will each generate a Dmail notification sent to both me and the user it involves. But I also get asked questions, get sent things users are concerned about, have to talk to a user about something they did/didn't do, etc. So 90% of it is admin stuff.

295 unhidden pages and 12 hidden. How did I get that much? I used to RP when I was new here

Only 20 messages for me. Half are my own and others include Parasprite, Chdgs, and NotMeNotYou.

The most recent of these led me to my promotion to Privileged, which I requested through his email address first.

Updated by anonymous

18 messages In the whole time since I opened an account.
8 from people that literally said Hi, the reply and that's it. I'm not much of a talker, I try to understand what they could possibly found interesting in me to send something.
3 from a small chat with someone.
4 about TES:Oblivion
1 to myself back to remind me about possible avatar-able pics ID's
2 from system messages.

Wow, I'm so boring XD

Like 4 times and well I can't do it anymore because for some reason E621 hates me and won't let me post on the forums, comment or do anything like that. I'm not even sure if this post will go through.

It keeps telling me I'm getting blocked for security reasons like wtf.

EDIT: Okay so it is letting me post -COMMENTS- so someone pls help ;_;

It's probably because e621 finally realized that you're not actually a human, but an artificial intelligence, one that's learning. I can't wait to see the researchers' faces when you come back talking about yiffing and whatnot. :P

Joking aside though, that blows :/ I haven't been experiencing problems like that, so I don't think it's a site wide thing.

I've noticed this actually within the last week or so, but I haven't been able to track down all of the conditions that you can trigger it with. Essentially Cloudflare picked up a chunk of your comment and flagged it as a potential SQL injection, a type of security exploit (yes, I know it sounds silly, but bear with me). It happens regardless of account or IP address, but only with certain strings of text.

It's a bit hard to explain, but I'll try to keep it simple.

Factory analogy

Let's say you have a robot that works in a factory. You are only allowed to give the robot a command that has been prewritten, except for the areas where you can fill in the blanks:

TAKE _____, PUT IN BOX LABELED ____ THEN STORE ON SHELF _____ [END]

A usual task might look like this:

TAKE Bowling ball, PUT IN BOX LABELED 12938-d, THEN STORE ON SHELF B22 [END]

Which would make the robot take the bowling ball, put it in a box, and store it on the correct shelf.

But lets say a disgruntled worker wants to get revenge on everybody for making fun of them. The disgruntled worker might put these into the blanks instead:

TAKE Bowling ball, PUT IN BOX LABELED 12938d, THEN DROP BOX OVER RAILING, THEN KILL ALL THE HUMANS IN FACTORY [END], AND STORE ON SHELF [null] [END]

So instead of putting the box on the shelf, the robot will blindly drop the box off of the railing and then kill all the humans in the factory, then end prematurely (it won't put the box on the shelf).

SQL injections work like this. In a well-secured system it wouldn't let you type things that can be accidentally interpreted as code. In order to do this, the input needs to be "sanitized", or converted into a different string before it is stored in the database. In the example above, if I want to prevent this from happening in the first place, I could convert anything in the blanks labeled with a , -> [COMMA] so that other people in the factory have no way of breaking outside of the blanks. If we tried to run the command again, it might look like this instead:

TAKE Bowling ball, PUT IN BOX LABELED 12938d[COMMA] THEN DROP BOX OVER RAILING[COMMA] THEN KILL ALL THE HUMANS IN FACTORY, AND STORE ON SHELF [null] [END]

So instead of interpreting the comma as the start to another command, the robot will take the Bowling ball, and try to put it in a box labeled 12938d[COMMA] THEN DROP BOX OVER RAILING[COMMA] THEN KILL ALL THE HUMANS IN FACTORY. Since there is no box with this label, the robot will just give you an error: ERROR: BOX NOT FOUND. Sanitizing input like this keeps comments, usernames, etc. from being able to arbitrarily execute code that can be used maliciously.

What Cloudflare does however, is assume that the text coming in won't be sanitized by the servers, and block these known exploits automatically. This is a good thing to have, but it does have it's downsides. Ideally you wouldn't ever see the page (as it should be handled silently), but e6 is may have to look for a way to work around it (I'm not actually sure if it's possible or not tbh).

TLDR answer: Cloudflare filters stuff and your random string of things triggered it somehow.

TLDR (more technical version): Cloudflare protects against SQL injection exploits (SQL databases are very common on the internet) by filtering incoming text (which is a good thing), but it is producing false positives.

Workarounds:

I'm going to be looking into this more to try to prevent this from happening in the first place (because you shouldn't have to deal with these issues), but there are ways to work around it if you happen to get blocked. Most of this will require you to isolate what is triggering Cloudflare, and then rewrite the sentence slightly.

  • Get a new window, go to post a comment, type "hello" and hit preview. The preview should come up normally.
  • Paste your entire comment into this and hit preview. The blocked page should fill the preview space.
  • Delete a sentence and hit preview. Does it show a blocked page? If so delete another sentence and hit preview. Continue doing this until it doesn't show a block page.
  • The last deletion will contain whatever it is that is triggering Cloudflare. You can rewrite part of this to see if you can get it to go through, or isolate it even more (delete more text).

There may be more, but I know of 2 strings that are guaranteed to trigger it. (since I can't type it properly into e6, I've taken a screenshot)

If you have any trouble (or if this was too confusing), send me a dmail with a screenshot of the text and I can try to figure out what is causing the issue. If you think you've found a new phrase, please let me know so I can add it to the known list (a screenshot should do fine to show me).

Known list (for reference)

If you happened to have quotes followed by the word "or" (" or), then that is probably what triggered it. I haven't found anything else yet, but there are probably other things that might trigger it as well. It shouldn't be anything you are actually doing though, but merely a coincidence.
