Topic: Questions on Patreon and Ko-fi, and their alternatives

Posted under Art Talk

  • So, I just set up a Patreon and a Ko-fi, and I don't know if I could turn them into a tipjar/paywall content. I am leaning into tipjar, as I'm doing commissions.
  • As I'm using my brother's PayPal for the moment, will there be conflicts on PayPal/Ko-fi if I don't use PayPal using my own name/email address? Would I be in trouble if I mention Patreon on Ko-fi or vice versa?

*And since Ko-fi doesn't allow NSFW content, and you could only get your Patreon fees at the end of the month with a fee, are there known alternatives?
SubscribeStar, Gumroad, and Redbubble are mentioned, and I'm not sure if Buymeacoffee and Ko-fi are the same.

  • Is it polite to greet and approach your customer who previously commissioned you if they're interested in commissioning?

Please don't do this lmao nobody likes to be begged for money. Advertise your comms and let people come to you.

I don't think paywalls are a good idea. Reason being it blocks people from seeing current artwork, thereby making them less likely to commission you for artwork in the future. However, a tipjar could be a good idea

I think it’s ok to left a greet if someone made post and saying they are looking for someone to commission no matter they previously commissioned you or not, the worst case is they just ignored your message

I wouldn't recommend pay walling unless you're very fast at drawing or already have a large following. Its very difficult to draw for your pay site supporters while also having art to post publicly and grow your socials. I think a tip jar would be better in your case, at least for now.

It probably won't cause issues but it's generally not a good practice. Look into making your own account if possible. You should be fine mentioning any site on Patreon, but Ko-fi has rules with external links leading to NSFW content.

The only one that I can think of is Pixiv Fanbox buts that's more suited for Asian artists and you would have to follow Japanese censorship laws.

Meh, the best way to remind previous commissioners is in your publicly viewable art with same kinds of content. i.e. Same character, same fetish if NSFW, SFW comic pages, and so on.

All the payment methods and site have negatives, but technically, you can use more than one. I don't know if Postybirb supports them all. Getting reliant on a single site is what got people into the mess with Patreon a few years back. This seems less of a problem than 2020, though? Of course the real problem is that there's really only Visa/MC in the West for credit cards. :(

It gets complicated, fast if you try multiple ways so most don't seem to bother. The compromise a lot of artists do is to have time-exclusives or versions not available on e621/FA/IB/Paheal/wherever. E621 enforces boycotts/embargoed images, and you have captive audiences on sites like FA/IB/other personal gallery-based sites so you can control what gets posted on your own account and when.

Definitely add links to your paysites in your artist Wiki entry and descriptions. Normally, people are using e621 as a sort of index to find content they want. Not sure if you're old enough, but think like the old Yellow Pages (very thick phone book) that had all business phone numbers with small ads, so if you wanted, say, an air conditioner repair shop, you could just pick one closest. Of course, now we have things like Google Maps and a ton of other choices.

You really, really should have a separate business and private Paypal account, from what I've read. They have some rules related to entities. They still need your real name, but you can have one for personal use, and another for your business transactions, if I understand it. Also, I've heard of nightmares where one payment processor syndrome means you lose access all at once to every source of income. Paypal is infamous for freezing accounts. "Don't do porn." <--- They're very damn serious!
