I feel like there was probably a valid reason to make a distinction, similar to how sploot isn't aliased away to on_front. But I guess it's too late to find out now.

Sploot is more specific, it requires the legs to be splayed out a certain way
I don't think a play bow really is? It's the head and chest down and ass up, which is the same as our ass_up tag

Here's all the posts that had the play_bow_pose tag though, if we want to revisit it: https://e621.net/post_versions?commit=Search&search%5Btags_added%5D=play_bow_pose

its use really dosn't seem consistent, at the very least. of the most recent dozen or so additions, only about half of them seem like they might maybe deserve the tag. some of them seem more like stretching, some of them seem more like rearing up to pounce, some of them are presenting, some of them are just having sex, etc.

Yeah. While there is some potential argument for an ass_up + inviting to play type of meaning, the play_bow_pose tag was small and most of it was really varied contexts for being ass up with not a lot of consistency between the images it was being used on. If we really want a tag for that specific type of meaning, then something like playful gets much better results. Or even to be even more specific then https://e621.net/posts?tags=playful+ass_up already has better results for that pose + being playful type of context. So nothing was really lost.
