Currently, there seems to be two differences between flying and midair: flying requires motion, and midair requires that the flying object is a character.
There's also suspended_in_midair, which doesn't have a wiki.
Should these tags be aliased together? The current wiki definitions don't seem to be different enough to be separate tags.

Flight is the process by which an object moves either through an atmosphere (especially the air), or movement beyond (as in the case of spaceflight)...
According to the wiki flying can be done by an object and not just characters while midair specifies characters. Also there's the problem that flying includes space flight while being midair has connotation of there being air. I think there might be a reason why the implication might not have been made yet.
Yeah I don't think an implication would work, at least not with the current tag definitions.
That said, the majority of posts with both flying and midair use only one or the other, while both tags would apply in the vast majority of circumstances.
Oh, suspended_in_midair with no wiki has way more uses than midair? Both of them have other tags related to them... this is a mess.
Is suspended_in_midair supposed to be without motion? If so, why does flying_kick imply it?
Personally, I'd like a way to distinguish between ballistic motion and controlled flight. I don't think any tags currently allow that. falling would cover a majority of it, but not quite all (such as being launched up).
Also the current falling wiki directly contradicts the flying wiki. It says that falling is not flying, but ballistic motion is falling, and the flying wiki claims that ballistic motion is flying.
I don't know how to fix this. I can't even think of a good hierarchy, primarily because I can't think of a name for an overall tag for "not touching the ground, regardless of motion or location". midair could almost be repurposed to work, but it wouldn't work for space. Such a tag would be very helpful for establishing a hierarchy, though.
