Topic: Character tag update

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I would like to request renaming the tag kathie_(character) to kathens_(character).
Reason: I am in direct contact with the character's owner and they have expressed displeasure at the outdated name and wanted a new or updated tag but didn't know exactly how to make the request, I've done this before so I thought I'd do it myself + add their tag to a few places it was missing.

You'll just need to make an alias request (or even use a BUR, using 38266 in the "Forum topic" box to attach it to this thread, if you want to), and ideally, to make things easier for an Admin to approve it, show the link with offsite sources.

"Kathie" (an alternate spelling of Kathy, short for Katherine) is a generic name, I'd be surprised if that tag only refers to a single character. It should be disambiguated.

Dadgummit, Watsit's right. I missed that. A manual replacement of the appropriate tags would be better. Furthermore, if the character owner doesn't go by Kathens but by some other name, it would be a good idea to replace the "character" part in the parentheses with that name.

sorry for the delay in response I got caught up with things.
I think this is a slightly pointless, the name "kathie" isn't the one being used anymore, "kathie" is an old name that the owner hates using, the character's name is Kathens now.

Kathie_(character) actually does only refer to one character, their character, I checked, so replacing the tag doesn't step on any toes as far as I can see.

If it's aliased, then any time anyone ever tries to use the tag now or in the future, it would be replaced with the new tag, even if it's not referring to that same character, which will almost certainly happen with a common name like that. If there aren't many current uses, it can be changed manually, otherwise you can request a mass update for the tag and keep it clear of other characters until it's applied, and in either case should be disambiguated afterward so people know not to use the tag (characters simply named "Kathie" should be given a more specific suffix, like the character owner, to distinguish them from other potential Kathie characters).

I actually wonder if "Kathens" should be given a more specific suffix too. It's less common than Kathie and may not have the same risk of clashing with other characters in the future, but I'm not sure if it's unique enough to not need a character owner suffix.

Seems like missing the point when mentioning it being an old name? If someone types in kath and gets that as suggestion... Disambiguate it.
There is an update feature instead of alias, BTW. You can make it only replace the existing tags, then change the older tag to invalid. This neatly solves someone accidentally using it again AND gets your new name on your character's posts. Are you 100% sure all examples are for your character? I mean, you do say you checked. If so, just do update.

Ah, ninja'd by Watsit.

kathie_(character)
kathens_(character)
There's a neat trick that hyperlinks tags. If you look at source, you can see how I did it with square brackets.

Wait, there's only 3 examples. Spoke too soon. OP could have just did it manually. XD

Bah, I said 'your character' when I meant generic 'you'. Sorry for confusion. 3rd party you is bad grammar?

kathens_(tygriis) is correct?

wait I could have made the change myself? How exactly, is there an FAQ thread explaining this?

Hit "Edit" under the post. In the now-revealed edit stuff, in the "Tags" box, remove the tag you want to replace and then stick in the tag you want to replace it with (using an underscore in place of spaces). Hit Submit. Then, if it's a General tag and you want it to be, for example, an Artist tag, look for the tag in the list to the left, click on the ? beside it. On the next page, go to the top and click "Edit Tag". In the page after that, change the category as desired and submit. Done. This can be done as many times as necessary.

I have changed spelling to Kathens, as requested. If you later need to add a disambiguation, we can cross that bridge when we get to it. Just in case, could you click the "?" next to the character name in the posts' list of tags on the left, and add the actually correct information on owner? I somehow got the wrong name of owner. I'll have to relook at it to see how I messed that up. :(

Kind of redundant explanation with the "?" mark, but adding a description in addition to category would help in future if someone else uses this character name.
