Topic: Are previous names visible by other logged in users?

Posted under General

I changed my username so it wouldn't be the same as my username elsewhere, so y'know, there's no chance someone would see my profile and see my kinks.
So it'd be very very unhelpful if other people who are logged in (i know people not logged in can't see it) can see my previous names.

You used to be able to see users' previous names on the pre-2020 version of the site, but they removed it with the rewrite for some reason. I presume administrators can still see your old names.

Additionally, if anyone's ever quoted a comment or forum post you made or replied to you by name, your old name is now immortalised in their post. There's not much you can do about that.

EDIT: Didn't take long to find an example.

if someone replied to a comment you made before you changed your username; that reply comment will still credit the old username

you might be able to ask either admins or the replier themself to edit that comment to use your current name, but idk if the former is available (worth a shot i'd say) and the latter is going to prove incredibly unpredictible (just ask a mod if they can expunge your old name pls)

That's kinda lame, but understandable, I guess.
At least one way's covered up.

Only janitor ranked users and above can see the name history on your profile, but anybody can find the information in the mod action logs. Even if the mod action logs were hidden, quotes will still display the username at the time it was quoted. There's also plenty of third party archives of the site's content.

The only guaranteed way to (publicly) disassociate yourself from a username is to create a new account instead.

I'm bringing this topic back up for something relevant.
There are replies to comments I made, replies that were made before I changed my name, these replies still show my original name.
I've been asking some of those people to edit their replies, and while this has been mostly successful so far, not everyone has done so, whether because they are inactive or some other reason.
Either way, my old name can still be found in some places, would it be possible to ask a moderator to help me in this regard?

I would suggest sending DMail to a staff member, rather than just hoping that one happens to see this thread. there's a much better chance of it getting read and replied to in that case.

there have been a few instances of this being done in the past, although I'm not sure if that was only with accounts that had been deleted.
