Reason:

Kind of a fad that has since faded out, but they are definitely dogs all the same.

A tentative option (in the case of fox-like ones) would be to imply canine instead.

I would definitely just go with canine.

Yeah, switched to be implicating sparkledog to --> canine and then approved. Because not all of them get any more specific than just being canine-like, some with mixed traits, and like mentioned, some have a fox base. So canine would be more accurate for them.
