Well, there's a few different things here:
- sketch
What's it's for: when something has that rough sketchy sketch-lines effect/look/style in it (regardless of medium used and regardless of finished/unfinished status).
known issues: it is sometimes misused for when something was found in the sketch/scraps section of another site [but we don't need to tag that here], or done in pencil, or is unfinished (unfinished/work_in_progress). It's also on occasion mistagged because artist slang sometimes uses "sketch" for "something-I-made-but-was-just-testing-something/fooling-around/not-taking-it-as-seriously-as-normal/this-looks-a-little-rougher-or-unfinished-compared-to-my-normal-style" etc so a few images wander in because of that. Despite that, the majority of images under there do seem to be using it correctly. Just needs a good cleaning someday but is fairly functional for that rough-sketched lines effect within an image.
Conclusion: I do wonder if renaming it to something like sketch_lines or even sketchy_lines would be more clear what it's for and reduce instances of people adding it by mistake. Any thoughts on that idea?
- sketches
what it's for: no official use for this tag. sometimes used for all of the above, sometimes just "sketch" in plural, so it probably worth getting rid of. Overall, aliasing it to --> sketch seems logical.
- sketchbook
What it's for: It's basically used for when you can see a sketchbook (as an object). So used when can see part of the book or binding in a photo/scan of art-that's-still-in-it, or can see a character holding a sketchbook, or drawing in a sketchbook (obviously also gets the creating_art tag in that case), etc. A lot of spiral bindings in there as well, because they're distinctive if can only see the back of it, etc.
conclusion: I think this tag mainly works. But should probably be linked in some related wikis somewhere where appropriate. I think a lot of people don't know it's there.
But there is sketchbook vs sketch_book, so if everyone's ok with it I'd like to alias those two into one tag. I know sketch_book is currently empty, but I've seen it used in the past. And mostly it'd simplify things if they both always went to the same place for searching and tagging. Probably sketch_book to --> sketchbook unless anyone has any objections.

Only other idea I have is "rough_drawing" but I don't think that would end up much different than sketch and might actually be more confusing.

Agreed.
Also: sketchdump sketch_dump --> sketch
Related: sketching (could mean either "a character drawing art" or sketch, but it isn't really used much).

That sounds good. I'll add sketchbook to my list of tags to fit in somewhere.
