I guess you could call them thick toenails...albeit very specialized thick toenails.

Sort of a joke suggestion, though the reason I carried through with posting it is I want to know what others think of it. Some people might be all for that.

I think that's more of a "what you know" type of idea rather than a "what you see" because actual toenails and hooves look completely different. So I'd think 'no' for that one.
Also, I'm not sure about the underhoof to --> hooves implication because, well... ponies. If you look at what is currently tagged with underhoof, there is a lot of undefined pony-stump-tyle-limbs with a little hallowed out indent on the underside. Like these:

I can see how it's probably enough to still tag it underhoof since it's stylistic (more of an implied underhoof, but still underhoof even if the hoof itself is not really drawn in). But I doubt it's enough of a hoof for people who are looking for hooves where the actual hoof should be at least visible. So I'm leaning towards 'no' on that one too. Even though it sounded great on the surface, it's just one of those cases where it surprisingly doesn't work after all.
So both are denied.

It's worth noting that all of those are tagged hooves as well (though that tag probably needs a cleaning).
It's also worth noting that underhoof -mlp brings up only 2 posts so it's obviously a tag that tailors to mlp more than anything else (probably because of the reletively large hooves).

Noted. But I honestly think most of that is because of the old unguligrade to --> hooves alias which blurred the lines between what the tag was meant for: whether it was for the physical feature or meant for "hooved in real life types of species". For instance, there's also a ton of images which have the hooves off screen but are still tagged hooves that need cleaned up as well. And then for whatever reason, mlp-related tagging has always struggled between people tagging what is known vs what is shown, so that's bound to be a factor on this as well.
And I suppose another factor is that we haven't had a tag for featureless_limbs until a few days ago. So some pony art, they know that ponies have hooves, so it gets tagged with hooves even if they're featureless or off-screen. But some of them are probably better tagged with something like featureless_limbs now that we have a tag for those kinds of things.

I looked at it somewhat differently. I figure that it's a relatively unknown tag for something that's been popularized by mlp fans because it relates to their fandom. So they make sure it gets tagged on some of the mlp pics, even though it's not excluive trait to just mlp. And the rest is undertagged because it's not a widely known tag.

I actually meant more "is popular with" than "tailors to", poor choice of words. But yeah, I can agree with this.
I was mostly just adding a few things I'd noticed about the tag as it had been on my list of suggestions for a while now and I kept forgetting to mention it. I forgot about featureless_limbs though, that will come in handy for hoof-retagging.

Yeah, I'm glad someone suggested that featureless_limbs tag. They'd seemed distinctive but I never gave it much thought. I think it'll be a good addition though, with some art styles especially.
And yeah, they're good points to address so it's probably good you brought them up. Goddess knows that tag's been a mess for awhile so there's gonna be questions that come up as we clarify it again. Just part of the job.
