Topic: is there a way to delete art you made?

Posted under General

there's some shitty old art i made here that i want gone since it's hideous to look at. is there any way for me to get rid of it?

Otherwise you can just cope (or blacklist it based on date), the old art is a good example of your growth as an artist, which can be uplifting to realize.

That's usually a bad reason to outright delete it, funny enough. Artists almost ALWAYS have far more critical view of their own art, because well, they're the experts. XD Also, it makes me sad to see more takedowns. It has value to someone. :(

It makes me sad as well, if artists delete their old posts. I love seeing them improve over the years.

As I've said in a different thread:

Quite frankly artist shame and embarrassment over their older works bother me. It's a form of perfectionism that tends to be self-destructive. Your art five-ten years ago was at the height of your skills then, just as your art is at the height of your skills now. In five-ten years from now, will you look back at today's art and be ashamed of it because you can do better then? Yes, you can do better now, but you should still be as proud of your older art as you are of your current and future art. If you're in the habit of nuking old, "shameful" art, how will you know how far you've come and how far you'll go?

Still, in the end, the decision is yours, not mine or anyone else's.

To which Watsit added:

Not to mention how it can influence and serve as inspiration to others. When other people are feeling down about how "bad" their art is, that older art lets them see that everyone starts somewhere and get better over time. Most people don't pop out of their mother's womb holding a paint brush or tablet pen and start churning out masterpieces when they first touch a canvas or tablet, even though it may feel that way to someone who wants to start doing art as a hobby or career. I see a fair amount of art getting deleted because "it doesn't represent my current skill level", and I can't help but feel saddened about current and future artists having less to see regarding other artists' journey of improvement. Or the fact that inspiration can come even from older, lower quality pieces, so how many works don't get created because the pieces that would inspire some artists have been deleted.

However, again, I must reiterate that the decision is yours and nobody else's, whereupon, you can, as faucet states, file a Takedown request. If you end up changing your mind later, you can also then contact the administration to have your work undeleted.
