Topic: A Request About The Ads.

Posted under Off Topic

Since men for me is a big turn off I have blacklisted what I don't want to see, but then the "KittyLovesMonster.com" ad came along and then, male butts everywhere. Okey, it's not that bad, but refreshing the browser until it's gone is a little anoying.

I have nothing against ads on this site, but since you where so kind and made the blacklist feature, could the ads have some sort of tags aswell? Or simply selecting the ones you don't want to see.

This idea was mentioned in the advertising feedback thread, but it was just kind of a side step from that thread's purpose, and I don't think it was given much consideration at the time. I could be wrong.
I, too, would like something along the lines of picking ad types. Blacklisting them doesn't sound practical to me if it would work the same as with images. Meaning, they simply don't appear, rather than being replaced by a different one.

I don't think a system like that would work, because people paying to advertise on this site would start asking for metrics indicating how much of the viewership has their ad increased or decreased in priority, and would expect to pay a different amount for the ad based on that.

Can of worms.

I understand what you're saying, Foobaria, but, for example, those who blacklist gay are not going to care about ads for a gay comic. Therefore, the advertiser isn't receiving any revenue form those people whether they see the ads or not. At the same time, since when have companies, big or small, cared whether or not people want to see their ads.no offense intended to Varka, Bad Dragon, and company.
It's not like I'm going to leave the site or use adblock if nothing comes of this, and noone should be advocating the use of adblock, if they care about the site they are on.

Just Adblock the ads.

Can Adblock block specific ads? I'm using it now but I don't know if it can do that

it can indeed! right click > block image... then on the selection screen you set it to only block THAT image (as opposed to all images that come from the adspace).

But - not to try an refute anyone's preference or taste - assuming you don't look exclusively at lesbians, you must see naked guys on the site a lot? just sayin.

EDIT: Okay, looked at budfisk's favourites. Not a male to be seen! I guess they really REALLY don't like seeing guys!

Yeah, the site stays operational through the ads, so I would not recommend everyone jumping on the adblock express. Unless you wanna derail the entire site in the process

I do use extensive adblocking and will never change that unless I am technically forced to by the website I want to use, but I wouldn't mind donating generously.
Just add the possibility to donate and see what happens...

Varka finds a 100l barrel of grape juice on his door step?

Hmm. What if ads had tags just like images, and blacklists filtered them just the same?

I gave it to a charity, but everything was pretty awkward. They probably thought it was poisoned or something. Don't get grapes if you aren't sure that you will "use" them.

That would only work if the blacklisted ads were replaced by others, or they could appear like blacklisted avatar pics do, the link is still active, but the image is replaced by the blacklisted box, instead of being hidden, like the posts are.

I may be thinking of another site, but I remember a time when there was this thing where the site I was on wouldn't load and showed a screen with a goal of [whatever] dollars and a donation button, saying "we need to reach this goal to be able to pay for the domain"

Feels like it was e6...

Ya, the only time I adblocked this site was when they were very annoyingly in the middle of the page :P

Despite being supportive of tags and how they keep the site running, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if the miniscule amount of people reading this thread started using Adblock, the site wouldn't take a nosedive into the earth and burn a horrible death.

That being said, don't Adblock. Ads aren't that hard to just ignore, anyway.

I say keep the ads, no question about that, but since this site is were most of us get our "relief" you don't want to see stuff that get you turned off. For example you wouldn't want to see ads with kids or babies in it.

I don't think you understand the types of people who frequent this site.

Doesn't ad delivery systems work by tags to present relevant ads? So a visitor does not see an ad out of his/her interests? Or you mean like edidaf said? Replacing ads for other ads/blacklisted image

AFAIK some adblockers use small bits of CSS to hide the image (sometimes container), so the image is downloaded (request made to the server, visitor counted) but not presented. I think these kind of adblockers do no harm...

I started using an adblocker since ads started to be made in Flash. THOSE are really annoying (large file size = longer load time, sound, video).

I have YouTube adclean because of that >_>

Be grateful that ads here are not of that kind, or pop-ups n_n

Bad Dragon owns e621. Varka is your own and only God, Master and Cocksmith :P

Nah, just that the ownership overlaps a bit (Varka) and even if they don't directly get ad revenue (I'm not sure if they do) they would probably have some sort of assistance in funding it.

That's why I only left it at "sort of".

Not to be that guy, but why does this come as a shock to you?

Seeing as it's been over a year, I'd assume the shock is quite worn off by now.

Huh. Interesting. Didn't know this was owned by the same company...

Even for its time it doesn't make sense.
