I keep geting bad gateway errors when i try to load e6 and its happening almost everytime i try. what does it mean

Your browser is having troubles connecting to the server, most likely only happening on the client side (i.e., you).
If that happens, check e621.net on https://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ and see if the whole website is down for everybody.
If it's not, then it's a temporary problem coming from your end. You can fix it by waiting for a few minutes before retrying.

i feel like if the E621 servers are down without notice, then something has gone VERY wrong, like, the servers are probably on fire. or its being DDoSed.

Error 503 means that you are being rate limited.
That is, you are sending way too many requests all at once, and automated protections are kicking in.
For example, this may occur if you try to open a lot of pages at once.

However, if it happens while you are browsing, that is not normal.
