Reason:

  • 1: Full name of Microsoft, however redundant it is to have a full company name as an alias. (It's what ImpidiDinkaDoo would have done.)
  • 2: Former name of their video game division.
  • 3: Video game developers owned by Microsoft to make video games. Also, Mojang develops Minecraft.
  • 4: Shorthands and alternate spellings of Turn 10 Studios.
  • 5: Forza is divided into two main series with distinct identities.
  • 6: Turn 10 is the developer of Forza Motorsport, and Playground Games is the developer of Forza Horizon. (Turn 10 assists Playground Games with Forza Horizon, but Playground Games are the primary developers.)
  • 7: Microsoft's most famous product and the basis of their current logo, along with several different versions of the operating system including the upcoming Windows 11. (Windows 8.1, while a different OS from Windows 8, is arguably not distinct enough from 8 to warrant having its own tag. I've also considered aliasing windows_95 to windows_9x as Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me) are part of the same Windows family and not terribly distinct from one another visually, but I feel that it would be overdoing it.)
  • 8: Microsoft's former and current web browsers.
  • 9: Clippy's real name. (Unless you guys really want "fan" nicknames.)
  • 10: Another well-known product, and Excel is part of the Office family.
  • 11: Old software from Microsoft and a character from that software.
  • 12: Another character from the Office Assistant family of characters that Clippit/"Clippy" is in. Since he appeared in three distinct products (Microsoft Bob, Microsoft Office, and Windows XP via its search function), I decided to implicate him to just microsoft instead. (Should I make an office_assistant character or copyright tag?)
  • 13: Another old software from Microsoft.
  • 14: Microsoft's search engine. Its name has been "Microsoft Bing" since 2020.
  • 15: Microsoft's late line of portable media players (and their media player computer software).
  • 16: The official name of the controller introduced with the Xbox One is the Xbox Wireless Controller, and since all versions of the controller work with the Xbox One and its successor the Xbox Series X and Series S (along with Microsoft Windows and, to a lesser extent, macOS, Linux iOS, and Android), it's frankly not proper to implicate it any one console no matter what revision of the controller it is. (And just to note, Sony's DualShock 4 being compatible with the PlayStation 5 not the same thing, since that controller has its own specific controller with the DualSense, and the DualShock 4's PS5 compatibility is only meant for playing backward-compatible PlayStation 4 games on that console. Microsoft deliberately made sure that all revisions of the Xbox Wireless Controller work between the eighth and ninth console generations as well as for PCs and smartphones, the latter provided it's the revisions with Bluetooth in them.) And while the are some distinct differences between revisions of the controller, they're not distinct enough to justify keeping them separate, save for the premium Xbox Elite Wireless Controller (both "series") which can have its own tag implicated to xbox_wireless_controller provided a post showing either version of that model is posted someday.
  • 17: The Xbox Series X/S is the brand name for Microsoft's two consoles for the current ninth generation. Since the both the Series X and Series S have distinct appearances from one another, while their shared controller has all the specific things I mentioned in reason 16, it would actually be redundant to have "console" in their tag names when either those specific consoles appear. Also, while the two consoles are promoted together by Microsoft as "Xbox Series X|S", the tag for the brand should use a slash instead of a vertical pipe to avoid issues with eSix's DText system on the wiki and comments with display text for wiki and tag search links, since using [[xbox series x|s]] would lead to just s. This is also to avoid conflicts with eSix's search and blacklist functions. (Note that Wikipedia does the same thing for technical reasons relating to their MediaWiki backend.)

Update one: Changed java_(microsoft) to java_(microsoft_bob) for the only two posts tagged with it and added an alias suggestion to reflect the change.
Update two: Added various Windows OSs and rover_(office_assistant).
Update three: Changed aliases and implications for the Xbox Wireless Controller, and added the Xbox Series X and Series S.

EDIT: The bulk update request #1040 (forum #312281) has been approved by @Millcore.

create implication java_(microsoft) -> microsoft_bob

Is this accurate? Java is a software platform/language by Sun (now Oracle), which Microsoft licensed and made their own version of for developers to use (which ended up becoming incompatible with the original, something they got sued over), and Bob was an alternative to Program Manager for early Windows. Wikipedia doesn't mention any link with their Java and Bob.

It's none of that; java_(microsoft) actually refers to a dragon character from Microsoft Bob.

I see. Maybe java_(microsoft_bob) may be a better tag, but I guess it doesn't matter terribly much.

Probably doesn't really matter, but I'd be more for that tag instead incase anyone really does care about it.

I definitely agree with this, I too was confused by the tag at first.

I have an issue with calling that controller an Xbox wireless controller, because it isn't always wireless. Furthermore, this term may apply to any number of examples of 360 controllers that happen to be wireless.

It is a point of confusion that can be worked around easily enough though.
