Topic: Tumblr and its Alternatives (excluding Twitter), How Are They Now?

Posted under General

It's been about two years since Tumblr has banned adult content, and there had been alternatives at its wake. I know that artists like me have moved to Twitter and Newgrounds, and there are the alternatives like Mastodon, Pillowfort, and newTumbl (which I am using, but not often; it's more like a backup for my art).

With what has happened over the past two years, with Tumblr almost bought by Pr0nhub (which in my opinion is a dodge in the bullet considering Pr0nhub's purge of unverified accounts), and Tumblr is now bought by Automattic (the company who owns Wordpress), how is Tumblr now, and its alternatives of Pillowfort, Mastodon, and newTumbl?

Asking whether or not Twitter pulls the Tumblr because I've heard of rumors of Twitter getting sued by joyless politicians writing down a lawsuit similar to SISEA.

EDIT: This is about Tumblr and its alternatives, not Twitter. Clarifying the title question.

Updated

Although a lot of artists migrated to Twitter, Twitter did nothing to support them. No changes have been made to their search engine, meaning Twitter is still a terrible site to search art on. If you can't search the art, then it's not good for the artists. The only advantage Twitter has is showcasing recent things or old popular things.

Yeah. But in the case Twitter pulls the Tumblr (some law made by some fun-hating politician trying to ban adult content on Twitter), I'm not sure if these Tumblr alternatives would work...

And it's been two years since the Tumblr porn ban.

NewTumbl's been working fine for me, just not a lot of artists went there.

Twitter is the biggest go-to site for most of the artists I've commissioned if not FA or their own personal discord's/websites and as others have said, Twitter isn't exactly the best site for art due to:
1. ANY picture an artist posts gets clumped into the Media section of your favorite artists, which means finding actual art is inconvenient since most artists tend to just caption actual art with a description with little to no differences between the art and some pictures they post, alongside whatever memes they tweet to friends or game screenshots they upload.
2. COMPRESSION Twitter compresses pictures incredibly awfully which means you'll most likely be seeing artifacting on the better looking pieces from artists, meaning that the quality is always worse when uploaded to Twitter.
3. Any transparent art (IE if the background of the piece is completely transparent if it were a PNG) gets completely ruined (IIRC the background becomes black or white unless you place a pixel somewhere in one of the corners of the piece.) This would go into the "compression" point but I feel there's a good enough reason why this should be it's own point as some artists like using transparent backgrounds.

I thought transparency was fine, and the thing with this was a .png will be converted to a .jpg unless there's a transparent pixel somewhere?

I use newTumbl too, though not as often as when I used the original Tumblr.
I might try the newTumbl sometime unless there's a review for it.

I should bump this again. I ought to clarify myself on what's the status of Tumblr nowadays and its alternatives like Pillowfort and newTumbl, and this shouldn't be about Twitter.

Pillowfort was a mess on launch and always will be. The place is run by Fanpol its not gonna be a good place to be.

I mean... Pillowfort is still offline, so can't say much about that. x.x

Well that's a shame for such a promising, yet overhyped Tumblr alternative. Me not joining Pillowfort has saved me the hassle of such a buggy site.
What about newTumbl and Mastodon?

At launch, yes, but if you think that it can't ever be anything more than that because of Fanpol having views that rustle your Jimmies, then too fucking bad. Overhyped, maybe in some ways, but just because its offline now doesn't mean they have given up.

The same people who were mods banning people for ships they didnt like are still moderators there.

The issue is still present.
Dunno what they paid you but Pillowfort is a shit site with bad staff and owners who were wholly unprepared for the undertaking.

Nobody is paid to defend the site's offline status. :/// They're having security issues and are trying to fix that I believe. It has nothing to do with the mods.

Hentai Foundry's submission process is shit and tedious.

The only shitty about it is that even I can't see my picture anywhere before it gets approved or rejected, meaning I can't quickly check and fix errors. But it's actually a good thing they go the manual premoderation route, I think.

So, I apologize if I bump this. Better to dust this off than make a new thread. We all know what's happening on Twitter.
Tumblr has since brought back erotic (but not pornographic) content, and Pillowfort now includes free registratons, and is run by donations.
I still don't know what Mastodon does, and Itaku has a nice gallery vibe to it (I've been there).

Are there any other further recommendations and updates about gallery and blog-oriented social media sites?

its a forum software that can connect with users on the fediverse. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse

mastodon sites are very small with only the main instance has any activity going, but most of the discusions are for tech and foss. mastodon.art is the best place for furries in the fediverse but Im not sure its better than other sites like furaffinity, itaku and tumblr
