Topic: Authors with great anthro anatomy knowledge?

Posted under Off Topic

I'm making a xenobiology project, and when things got to anatomy of my creatures I've began to struggle a bit with how to adapt human anatomy for some non-human traits. Then I had a thought "wait, aren't furry community is basically built around creating non-humanoid anthropomorphic characters?" and decided to go dig around a bit, particularly the 18+ images. I lowkey understand that porn is maybe not the best thing to study anatomy, but it's the only genre I can think of where the characters will definitely be naked and drawn from all sorts of unusual angles and postures.

but what I saw was honestly a bit disappointing. One of the main topics I was interested is how the pelvic area gets changed when there's a thick tail being present, so I went to shuffle through some reptile pics, but majority of pictures is either take perfectly normal female anatomy and then just stick the tail between the ass cheeks, with it often looking like it has no width to it at all (like here example: https://e621.net/posts/2036189 ) or place it too high on the back, or go to the other extreme and ditch the anthro aspect making the characters too animalistic in posture and proportions. What's left is the pictures drawn from such an angle where you can't see much.

Ok, so since jusr rummaging through the sire failed, I need help. Can you share artists that have good and detailed anatomy of that kind of things, or maybe even specialize on specifically non-porn anatomy studies? any help would be appreciated.

I've noticed that Asian artists are more likely to have a firm grasp on anatomy. I don't mean this to offend anyone, they just usually study both human and animal anatomy more than western artists.

That said, are these images a little closer to what you were looking for?

^ I agree. Here are a few artists I like who draw reptile tails with a little more attachment to the torso than a butt add-on (coincidentally, mostly Japanese)

Also maybe check out b-epon, scappo. And Salazzle from Pokemon Sun/Moon is a well-done scalie character with a 3D model you can actually download and play around with.

Unfortunately what happens with a lot of furry art is the porn-relevant bits get moved around a bit to either make them visible when they shouldn't be, or to make posing work. Even many artists who will draw "accurate" anatomy construction in some circumstances will draw completely differently at another angle.
I'll poke around my personal archives for posts that might be relevant.

Thanks for the examples, y'all! Well, from looking over the examples posted, I think that my own version is turned out to be quite close to the most common depiction.

Although I still have no idea if this is the anatomically correct or "everybody doing that" kind of deal, on most pictures it is rather hard to define any muscles beside the butt. ^^"

Do you think it looks anatomically correct?

An artist's grasp of anatomy could be flawed even before you consider that anthros, dragons, taurs, etc. are loosely related to any actual living creature. And there can be honest mistakes and deliberate exaggerations.

This will become more important as we start to venture into genetic engineering, or if humanity discovers and captures images of alien lifeforms.
