Topic: Questions/clarifications for a new user on tagging

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I'm writing this post for the second time since my computer crashed 80% through writing it the first time, so apologies if I'm not very intentional/efficient with my words.

I'm a new user when it comes to having an account and actually editing posts, and I want to make sure I don't mess it up, so I thought I'd make a post asking some questions I'm unsure of after reading through the help sections on tagging/tagging checklist. I read the tagging alias section as well although I'm not 100% sure I understand it as a whole, but anyways:

Is there any way to check if there's a reason a tag might be missing? Intentionally leaving out something that might be seen in a post for example, for whatever reason? For example I've noticed a couple posts lacking bad_dragon despite recognizing toys in the post from the brand, and I'm unsure if it's just a matter of the tag being forgotten or if there's a reason it might be missing.

Secondly, is there any way to double check if my tag edits are deemed correct or incorrect in some way, other than double checking to see if the changes I make are reverted? I want to be able to tell if I'm doing it right so I can keep doing what I'm doing or change if I mess up.

Finally, are there any guidelines/tips/etc. I should know going forwards that might not be obvious or covered in the help guides? Things I should know if I'm going to continue trying to help out with tagging and such?

Thanks in advance for the possible responses and apologies if this post is overly common and I missed the answers looking for previous posts on the matter, or if I posted this in the wrong forum category.

well every post has a 'tag history' link in the sidebar, which lists the details of every tag edit; there's a field 'reason' which might tell you why a tag was removed, if that user bothered to specify.

while i haven't read those particular guides, my tips would be:

• if you're not sure whether you're using a tag correctly, check whether the tag has a wiki page. the wiki should describe criteria in which the tag applies, contraindications, may list other related tags, etc.
if you can't find a wiki page here, try checking on Danbooru.

• the autocomplete and related-tags panel should help you find correct names for tags, but ultimately you just need to get familiar with the common tags over time; you can expect that your first attempts at fully tagging a post will be quite time-consuming (at least, based on my own experience).

• when determining the tags for a post, i often start by analysing the image along its axes; for example:
z-axis - background details (scenery/environment), foreground objects, camera angle;
y-axis - hair, facial details, neck/shoulders/chest/arms, belly/crotch/legs, feet/ground.
by spatially sweeping the image like this you can usually extract a least a handful of tags from each area. i'm sure everyone has their own approach, but this works well for me.

I'm in this exact situation, and I really want an answer too... Mostly, I'm replying to bump this post, hopefully get some more answers for it. One perspective is helpful, but more is always better!
