Topic: List of Artists who are alright with having their content on here

Posted under Art Talk

This is something I've been thinking about ever since I started uploading on this site.

A thread where users can list artists that have given them the A-OK for uploading their art on here.
Such a list would make it a lot easier for users to find artists to upload for, and as an added plus, it would remove the irritation for some artists of being asked this question constantly.

Users would list the artists that they have gotten a "Yes" from, any special requirements from the artist (Everything but my scat content can be uploaded), and then edit their post at a later date to add new artists, or edit previous artists (Everything but my scat content can be uploaded Everything can now be uploaded).

The list would/could look something like this:
Artist A (Everything but his MLP content)
Artist B
Artist C (Does not want any of his watersport images to be uploaded)
Artist D

What do you guys think? If it's something that you like, I'll start making my list and then post it.

Has one problem, who verifies that people aren't pulling stuff out of their asses?

Just look at the DNP list. Is the artist on it? If not, then it's okay to post. We're talking about a list of literally thousands of artists. This is why this idea's been turned down all the other times it's been brought up.

Just because an artist is not on the DNP does not mean that their art is okay to post.

Should we stop asking artists for permission to post their artwork?

I don't see much purpose of that, but if a user is asked about it, and they can't produce any evidence about it, then they're bullshitting. And since a lot of users already have asked as well, they can back it up as well.

Thiis could be a double edged sword, either they say yes, or they say fuck this and make takedowns on all their art on site

thewielder is not on DNP, he got angry because some random dude linked an image to this site and just nuked everything with a takedown. Post dating from 5-6 years ago

Some artists have little blips on their gallery pages or artwork pages that say it's OK for none commissioned work to posted elsewhere, but I find those a bit rare at times.

Maybe just a list of artist who have publicly gave the OK, either at the source or on their main gallery page at whatever site they are hosting their work, in order to make the list easily verifiable. The list of course would be a lot smaller but at least it would be accurate.

I'm not terribly interested in doing this mostly because we probably shouldn't be acting as any sort of authority as far as telling users whose artwork you can upload without asking the artist or copyright holder for permission. Just because an artist gives permission doesn't mean that that permission applies to every single piece of artwork they upload from then on. They may change their mind later, or they may specifically NOT allow the reposting of specific pictures at times (such as if the commissioner/character owner requested that it not be). So it wouldn't be a good idea for e621 users to be given the impression that an artist will ALWAYS be ok with their artwork being posted to the site.

We don't want to deal with any "But YOUR LIST said it was ok!" complaints from users when artists end up asking to have certain posts removed.

Based on a completely unscientific but decent-sample-size (~500 artists) project that Tony took on a while back, I can tell you with reasonable confidence that the vast majority (80-90%) of artists seem to have no problem with their artwork being reposted to e621 as long as they receive proper credit and a link back, AND if they're asked for permission first. I don't know how far that percentage drops if you don't ask for permission first, but I imagine it's probably still over 50%. So chances are good that most artists you ask will be totally fine with having their art reposted elsewhere; again, this fact makes having a "whitelist" kind of unnecessary, as it would end up being MUCH larger than our current DNP list, yet still can't "guarantee" that any of the artists on the list won't end up changing their mind or won't want specific pictures on the site.

I agree with this. More people want their stuff posted, rather than not. It makes more sense to make a list who don't, as opposed to the ones that do.

I think of it more as a way to encourage users to upload content from artists that approve of it.
