Apparently searching the change history by tag is disabled, at least for regular users - is that intentional and explained somewhere, or something that needs reporting? Does anyone know? I couldn't find anything mentioning it.

iirc it was about Google's crawler indexing the Tag History to page 99999 and beyond, making eSix agonize in pain
not exactly like that but you get the idea c:

If that's the problem, can't we just boot their crawler off the tag history and force it to navigate the post list and forum list instead?

Looks like it's already disallowed in robots.txt, no (legit) crawlers should be poking it.

Any update on this? If Google's crawling really was the reason, it's not even allowed to access the page now.

If you mean because of the robots.txt, it doesn't actually block things. It's just that crawlers are 'meant' to check it before searching through the site, it doesn't mean that they 'have' to check it. Essentially it's just a polite way of saying, "please don't crawl through these pages," but it can be completely ignored.
I imagine it was actually a different crawler that didn't respect robots.txt and just crawled through everything regardless.
