Topic: [question] uploading an image too big

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

i was going to post this image but it's too big. i thought cropping the panels and grouping them on a pool should do it but thats against the rules according to uploading guidelines low quality posts

Updated

You can resize an image to fit the limit, I've done it myself before

Just make sure that is acknowledged on the post itself, by tags ("better_version_at_source") or mention in the description

Hi there, completely ignore my words. I was entirely misinformed, so my word is wrong here, and it was irresponsible of me to spread misinformation, even if it was by accident.

Listen to @Mairo on this one, sincerest apologies

I would think that a better solution would be to chop the image up into panels and then upload those into a pool. That way there isn't a loss in quality and we still get all the images.

It's kinda late now for your post, but for similar cases in the future (and correct me if I'm wrong):

I think you (as the artist) are allowed to post "cropped" images to bypass the site's resolution limits, especially since your cropped panels would have better image quality than the "full" version you were able to upload.

The guideline against crops you mentioned seems to be intended for things such as (a) people who aren't the artist uploading cropped art, and (b) any* equal- or lesser-quality cropped versions of existing e621 posts.

*with occasional exceptions for things like reaction images

This whole goddamn thread makes me hurt.

I would actually like it if someone with admin status would not make these kind of statements, as your status means that people trust your word.

Cropping > Downscaling.
Correctly done cropping keeps all details intact, scaling alters the artwork. At this point there's also no need for better version at source which we should aim to use as low amount as possible.

If there's clear distinguishable parts on the too large image, then crop them and post in two/several parts and link with pool or parent/child.
Also if you are downscaling JPG file, DO NOT SAVE IT AS JPG AGAIN, but instead as PNG. This is to avoid generation loss, which is our biggest enemy in many things. Also if you do have image which needs to be downscaled, ensure you are using lanczos3, nohalo or some other method which ensures that most details stay intact (reason why I hate FA, because I think they use bicubic or something similar which makes everything soft and and even more compressed looking).

Cropping also makes the general thumbnails much more useful when they aren't 2px wide lines.

Both your example and OP example have clear parts where the post is easy to crop into two or several parts, so both of those should be done exactly that.

ALSO

When cropping, PNG is easy to handle as resaving doesn't effect quality, but with JPG files, USE DEDICATED TOOLS WHICH CAN CROP LOSSLESSLY!
For Windows, one graphical software I found which can do this is freevimager. Limitations that this has is that the cropping needs to be done with 8px accuracy and many don't know the difference between lossy and lossless crop, so PNG files are generally easier to handle, if artist can provide that even better.

The panels available on tumblr might be bit higher quality, do tumblr export and one panel is already at post #1640739.

@mairo i first thought on PM you but my idea of users non contributor/priviledged is that they always have something better to do.
next time should i ask you instead of writing a post?

that aside, now should post the cropped files and then flag post #1848200 as duplicate/inferior or leave it there?

Either way is fine, forum just means that now everyone can find this information instead of asking me same things over and over again in dmails.

Main reason why I am even here is that I get angry at situations like these and get invested, so I'm definitely here to be bothered with these things.

Upload individual posts, pool, then flag the downscaled full version as inferior to first panel.
(Also checked the tumblr versions, those seem to be lower quality from the furaffinity version, so just post cropped panels.)

do you know any program which uses those algorithms? because googling all i found were forum posts about which one is better for upscale/downscale.

also, i used photoshop cs5 extended to downsize post #1848200

I imagine most if not all decent graphics programs will give you the choice of changing the Interpolation when you scale a picture. In the dialogue box the GIMP tosses up for when you chose to scale something, under Quality, you can choose what the Interpolation is by clicking on the V on the end. The default is Cubic, but you can go down in quality to Linear or None or up to NoHalo or LoHalo, the latter of which I presume produces the best quality.

Your Photoshop CS5 Extended should have something similar when you go to scale something.

i've checked and i think it doesn't. i know gimp is free so i'll be using it to be sure the quality is ok if i have to downsize something again.

thanks for responding my questions btw
