I presume they mean 2 million hosted images, not just the ID number, which also includes deleted posts.
There's a count of them on the home page:
https://e621.net/
The current ID is over 2.1 million, but the homepage says Serving 2,004,289 posts.
Though according to the stats page there's only 1.8 million actually active.

Counter in the front page is actually constantly slightly off and of course the amount of posts deleted alter what is considered to be 2 million.
Also shows how much uploads have increased as millionth post was 3 years ago and content goes back 11 years.

It is pretty amazing just how much art is being produced nowadays.
It's definitely a nice thing, but it also sorta gives me a sense of unease. Specifically when I think about the art that may have slipped through the cracks, so to speak, never to be seen again.

This is kinda exactly why I hate people who complain about things like DNP list, when that time could be spend on actually uploading artwork that can be uploaded which there are thousandfold from several decades now.
Additionally we have no idea how long tumblr posts stay alive, VCL is now pretty much dead with none of the artist pages working, how many dropbox and megaupload links I'm finding in furaffinity descriptions, etc.
