I posted a picture by lyndoi227 that wasn't pay content and met quality standards. It was taken down for being smaller than a post that was put up by someone else AFTER my post. I'm not sure if that's fair.

You didn't put up the best version, and someone else did.
It's not like this is a contest.

They always keep the one that's the best quality. If there's a better quality out there, and someone uploads it after yours, then that one will be kept and yours will be deleted. Always upload the best you can find, but if it happens and yours was smaller, then just accept that these things happen.
Also, for best results when you're contesting something it should probably be in a PM to a mod, not in a public forum topic. Unless you're just fishing for public opinions.

Like the others have said, we keep the best version around except if that version is pay to view, in your case you uploaded 500x500 preview and somebody uploaded the 1,200x1,200 full version.
It would make no sense for us to keep your inferior version around if we have an objectively better version and it would make even less sense to delete the better version just because the other came first.

They were deleted because they don't fit the site at all.

The post in question is post #520726
You uploaded the preview version of:
http://lyndoi227.tumblr.com/post/94519806972/look-fluttershys-dick-is-even-sorry-i-fucked
On tumblr, preview versions are always 500 pixels wide, so you can find them by searching e621 for:
width:500 source:tumblr
and then checking if there's really a bigger version at the source
(that's how I found post #520726)
Just click on the preview version on tumblr and you'll see the full version.
