Topic: cleanup of caption tag

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I was thinking of making alias suggestion of caption -> caption_(disambiguation),
but such an alias maybe unnecessary for now.

Mainly wondering what the scope of caption tag should be
(currently e621 has no wiki page for caption).

(EDIT: partial summary of below. One of the problems is some people seem to be using caption when they should be using speech_bubble.)

Current e621 *caption* tags :

Wiktionary has https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/caption

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caption says "Caption may refer to:

  • An element of comics where words appear in a separate box, see Glossary of comics terminology#Caption
  • Caption (comics convention), a small press and independent comic convention held annually in Oxford, England
  • Caption (law), arrest or apprehension
  • Closed captioning, used to provide the text of a show's audio portion to those who may have trouble hearing it
  • Subtitle (captioning), textual versions of the dialog in film and other visual media
  • Intertitle, a piece text edited into a film to convey information like dialogue
  • Photo caption, explanatory text about specific published photos

..."

Wikipedia's text below regarding captions in comics are a bit confusing:

a) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_comics_terminology#Caption is a bit weird saying

In a caption, words appear in a box separated from the rest of the panel or page, usually to give voice to a narrator, but sometimes used for the characters' thoughts or dialogue.[21] In some comics, where speech balloons are not used, the caption provide the reader with text about what is happening in the images. This genre is called text comics.

b) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speech_balloon#Captions
seems more straightforward:

Captions are generally used for narration purposes, such as showing location and time, or conveying editorial commentary. They are generally rectangular and positioned near the edge of the panel. Often they are also colored to indicate the difference between themselves and the word balloons used by the characters, which are almost always white. Increasingly in modern comics, captions are frequently used to convey an internal monologue or typical speech.[7]

(grr, character thoughts and internal monologues should go in thought_bubbles.
Character dialogue should be in speech_bubbles. ... i think.)

Some tag changes:

Noticed some posts tagged with caption when they should be tagged with speech_bubble.

examples: post #1784255 , post #1784249 , post #1707906
(removed caption tag, tagged with speech_bubble instead).

post #1653504 was tagged with caption, probably because of either the speech_bubbles or the URL section at bottom of page.

changed post #1763421 from caption to subtitled (there is wiki at subtitled, with 500+ posts)

Updated

Not sure what to do with tags of artwork with patreon text.

Bottom of post #1632836 says
"Want access to unreleased pages IN COLOR? Join at [Patreon link]"

(EDIT: tagged with caption) Tag as promo_text instead?

current *promo* general tags are (sorted by number):

  • 9 promo general
  • 5 promotion general
  • 1 promotional general
  • 1 earning_promotion general (post #201079 is wordless ... so reading between the lines for this tag)
  • 1 promotional_art general

How about comic captions be tagged as caption_(comic)??

If tag was caption_box ... there could be confusion with other kinds of captions that happen to be in a box:
(other caption examples from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caption : "Closed captioning", "Subtitle (captioning)", "Intertitle", and "Photo caption".)
